ABSTRACT
Background: The burden of OA will increase with aging of the population and the
present obesity epidemic. More sensitive and precise biomarkers can potentially aid
identification of those at highest risk of rapid disease progression and provide new
surrogate markers for radiographic OA. One such potential biological marker of
arthritis is cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Our objective was to
evaluate the association of body mass index (BMI) and COMP levels in women
with postmenopausal symptomatic osteoarthritis.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken using consecutive sampling
during October to December 2017. The study population comprised of female
patients age 50-70 y.o with OA genu which confirm by plain x-ray and had
menopause since last 1 year. We exclude patients who underwent surgical
procedure for their genu and those who got hormonal therapy.
Keywords: symptomatic osteoarthritis; postmenopausal woman; cartilage
oligomeric matrix protein; body mass index
