Good Afternoon!

Welcome to SLQS Toastmasters’ club Contest.

I am indeed honored to be the Master of Ceremony for today.

 Once a teacher asked his two students to come and meet him at start
of a track, which was near a forest.
 Students reached there on decided time and greeted their teacher.
Teacher showed them track and said, “You both have to start here and
reach end point of track.. Completing this track will also affect the
result of test which will happen next week..”
 He wished them luck and started race.. Both of them started together.
Just after a while students saw that track was divided into two path.
 First student decided to follow path, which seemed clear and was
easier to go through. Whereas second student decided to go by path
which was not so easy as it was blocked by fallen logs and other
obstacles.
 First student finished first and felt clever as he came first and passed
that track easily avoiding all the hindrances and obstacles of other
path.
 Main Navigation Second student took a while to reach the end, as he
had to pass through that path battling obstacles in that path. Second
student was happy that he was able to complete that race despite
taking difficult path.
 When second student reached end point, first student proudly said, “I
am glad i chose easier path as they would have only slow me down..”
 Teacher smiled and asked them to join him at specific location for next
week test.
 For next test, students were called near a ravine.
 Teacher looked at students and said, “You have to jump to other side
of this ravine..”
 Students were taken back as the distance was few meters wide. First
student saw the width of ravine and could not get courage to jump it,
as he never did that before. He got scared and stepped back from test.
 Then teacher looked at second student. Second student remembered
his track of his last test and how he jumped wide gaps there.
 He measured his run up, sprinted towards the ravine and launched
himself into the air.. and He Made It…!!
 After completing test, Teacher said to first student, “In your previous
test the difficult path was made such a way that completing it would
have prepared you for this one.
 When you chose easier path it helped you to complete that test easily
but you were not able to prepare for tougher exams.”
 “When you face any difficulties in Life, You shouldn’t get scared and
understand that life is meant to be a series of challenges that we
overcome, not avoid. Do not pray that God will remove the obstacles,
pray that he will give you the strength to overcome them.

All our contestant today have decided to take this challenge, just like the
second student in my story which will help them to give strength to their
future challenges.
I am sure that it will be a great show to watch. They have worked hard to do
this and I wish them all good luck today … and let us give them the respect
and appreciation by paying undivided attention during their speeches.

I will explain the common ground rules for the contests today and the
Contest Chairs will be explaining the rules specific for their contests.

We have 4 contests today, International speech, Table topic, Evaluation and

Humorous speech……… in that order.
1st and 2nd place winners (to confirm) of today’s contests will progress to
represent Area 21 in the Division Q contest, which will be held on 06 April
2018. (to confirm).

To be eligible to compete in any official Toastmasters speech contest, a

member must be a paid member of the club, area, division, and district in
which he or she is competing in a club of good standing. The club must also
be in good standing. They must maintain eligibility at all levels of any
contest.

Before the contest, contestants are briefed on the rules by the contest chair.
Contestants also have drawn lots to determine their speaking order.

Voting judges, counters, and timers are briefed on their duties by the chief
judge.

Contestants and Judges have signed the Eligibility and originally form, as
applicable and all of them have indicated that they are eligible to contest.
Contestants must create their own speeches, and each must be substantially
original.

Contestants in the International and Humorous contests are permitted to

remain in the same room throughout the duration of the contest. Evaluation
Contest participants are required to leave the room after the test speech
has been delivered.

Table Topics contestants must stay out of the room until the preceding
speaker has completed his or her response to the topic.

There will be one minute of silence between contestant speeches, during

which judges will mark their ballots.
When the last contestant finishes speaking, the contest chair will ask for 3
minutes silence until the ballot counters have collected all ballots.

Protests are limited to eligibility and originality and shall only be lodged by
voting judges and contestants. Any protest shall be lodged with the chief
judge and/or contest chair prior to the announcement of the winner.

Announcement of contest winners is final unless the list of winners is

announced incorrectly, in which case the chief judge, ballot counters, or
timers are permitted to immediately interrupt to correct the error.

Timing will begin with the contestant’s first definite verbal or nonverbal
communication with the audience. This usually will be the first word uttered
by the contestant, but would include any other communication such as
sound effects, a staged act by another person, etc.

The speaker should begin speaking within a short time after arriving at the
speaking area, to avoid delays.

Prior to announcing results, the contest chair shall announce if time

disqualifications occurred, but not name the contestant(s) involved.

The speaking area is this stage and all the speakers are expected to speak
from this stage including the lectern.

Now are you ready to listen to exciting speeches, ……… Without further
delay, let us invite our Contest Chair for first Contest – the International
