Clementi, Muzio (1752-1832)

 Italian composer and pianist


 Classical period, contemporaries include Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
 Considered as the “Father of Modern Piano Playing” as he pioneered a new (non-
harpsichord) technique.
 Composed mainly for piano, also symphonies, and chamber music.
 His output for piano include more than 60 sonatas, sonatinas (Op. 36, 37, 38) and a famous
collection of studies called “Gradus ad Parnassum” Op. 44 (Latin “Steps to Parnassus”,
the mountain where Apollo and Muses live on).

There are 3 movements in this sonatina:
1st is Spiritoso
2nd is Un poco adagio
3rd is Allegro

 Sonatina: “a little sonata”, an instrumental work composition with the


characteristics of a sonata but on a smaller scale and often less technically
demanding for the performer. Composers who composed in this genre included
Clementi, Dussek, and Kuhlau.
 Form: Ternary Form (ABA Form)
 Modulations (change of keys) in A: Subject 1 (CM)- Subject 2 (GM-Dominant Major).
 Modulations in B: GM-CM.
 Modulations in A: Subject 1 (CM-GM)- Subject 2 (CM-stays in the Tonic key until the
end)
