Lab Write Up From Hell

1. The student predicted which reactions would produce precipitates, acid-base neutralizations, or no reactions by analyzing a solubility chart. Reactions between insoluble reactants were predicted to produce precipitates, while reactions between acids and bases were predicted to be neutralizations. 2. Experimental results mostly matched predictions. Precipitates formed in reactions involving Na2CO3, Na2SO4, NaI, NaSCN, Na2Cr2O7, and NaOH. The reaction between HNO3 and NaOH was an acid-base neutralization as predicted. 3. Balanced equations were written for each reaction, showing precipitates, aqueous ions, gases, and liquids produced.

Experiment 9-1 Post Lab

1. Hypothesis
a. We predicted which compound would be a precipitate by looking at the intersection of
the two reactants on a solubility chart. If the chart says the product is insoluble, then
there will be a precipitate. We predicted which reaction was an acid/base neutralization
reaction by looking at our given reactants and identifying which were acids and bases.
Acids have an H+ ion, so the acid in our experiment is HNO3. Bases have an OH- ion, so
our base is NaOH. The acid/base neutralization reaction would be the one where HNO3
and NaOH react with each other. We predicted which cells would have no reaction by
looking at the solubility chart. If the product was soluble or the products would not
react with each other, there would be no reaction.
