REASONS BEHIND THE DWINDLING OF THE INDIAN DYE INDUSTRY IN THE 19TH

CENTURY

1. After the victory of Plassey in 1757, the East India Company started plundering wealth from
India by ways of exports, including dyes. This wealth helped them during the Industrial
Revolution which was the reason behind the downfall in the Indian dye industry.

2. When the British took over the East India Company, they started filling the Indian marker
with cheaper goods, adversely impacting indigenous industries.

3. When Indian dyes were in great demand in England and Europe, the British taxed them
heavily and curtailed trade.

sometimes even free of cost.

6. the methods used to produce indigenous dyes were cumbersome. The involved a lot of
labour and time. The yield was small.
