Reginald Gammage- Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Title: Trail of Tears

Curriculum Framework Content Name, Number and Description: Arkansas History (9-12)
Era2.2.AH.9-12.1, Evaluate intended and unintended consequences of public policies (e.g.,
Louisiana Purchase, Missouri Compromise, Indian Removal)

Learning Activities: The students will watch the video about the Trail of Tears and learn about
the Indian Removal Act. The video explains there was a petition signed by the Native Americans
but ignored even though it was seen as unconstitutional to remove them from their land. After
the video we will be able to discuss the consequences of the Indian Removal Act and the toll it
took on the Natives. From this students will be able to understand how the Trail of Tears
received its name and why it was such a horrific time for the Natives of the land.

Assessment/Evaluation: The graphic organizer allows for students to pull out a few important
details about the Indian Removal Act and allows for them to note the tribes that were affected.
The organizer then allows for them to construct some deeper thoughts as to why the Act was
still passed even though it was said to be unconstitutional. While the organizer is ultimately the
assessment for the lesson, discussion will also play a factor as we reflect on what we have
learned.
