digital, to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and

phrases.

3. Objective(s):

- Students will sort their spelling words into categories based on their sound and spelling
patterns
- Students will use a variety of materials to locate other words that have the same spelling
patterns they are studying

4. Materials and Technology Resources:

- Individual spelling lists - Pencils

- Dictionaries - Anthology books

- Chromebooks - Spelling Cards (to sort)

- Notebooks

5. Instructional Practices (5 minutes)

A. Motivation/ Engagement
- Students will be given their individual spelling lists. Teacher will tell students that they will

be sorting their spelling words in various ways. Students will then choose to work

independently or with a partner.

B. Activities & Experiences (20 minutes)

- Students will sort their words according to how they sound. They can sort these

depending on their needs (i.e. short vowels, long vowels, vowel teams). They may also

choose their own categories to sort by.

- After students have finished sorting their words, they may begin the word hunt. ​During

the word hunt, students will search through print materials or online to locate other words

that fit the spelling patterns they are currently studying.

C. Closure (5 -10 minutes)

- To end the lesson students will share the words they found during their word hunt and

justify why they selected those words.

D. Extension & Contingency

- In the next lesson, students will use their word lists to write sentences using their words

in context.

6. Accomodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners

- Students will be given individual spelling lists depending on their spelling stage. Teacher

will provide one on one assistance during the activities as necessary.

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning

A. Teacher will analyze spelling and word hunt lists to see what students may need

reteaching on certain spelling patterns.
