Suspense?

Jane woke up, stretched, and made her way downstairs. Halfway down the flight

of stairs, she heard a noise. It wasn’t a very loud noise, but it sounded like it came from

close by. Curious, Jane made her way towards the source of the sound. As she made it

down the flight of stairs, the eerie noise clawed its way past the silence once again. At

this point, Jane was terrified. She had never experienced something like this before,

thoughts were racing through her mind as she walked down the hallway of her home.

Was that a mouse? An intruder? A murderer? Slowly but surely, these thoughts got

increasingly worse, and it was starting to take a mental toll on her. Finally she made it to

the source of the noise; a worn out closed door. Jane stood there in front of it, shocked

at its appearance. Never in the years she had lived in this house had she ever seen this

door. It took a moment for her to muster up the courage to even touch the door, and

eventually, she opened it. The creak of the door being opened was enough to make

Jane yelp. Jane stood at the open doorway, her silhouette overshadows the light that is

trying to escape into the room. She takes a few steps into the darkness, all she could

hear is the thump of her heart racing in her chest and the creaks of the worn out boards

beneath her. She stopped in the middle of the room, her shadow no longer engulfing the

scene. She took into account what was in the room, but noticed nothing of significance.

Then the darkness swallowed her, and Jane’s heart jumped. The noise echoed once

more in the enclosed darkness, and a pair of yellow pupils glimmered, circling her.

Jane’s scream echoed throughout the house for a brief moment, then silence.
