I. METHODOLOGY

The method of the study uses a Ethnology Research— it is the study of the
attributes of different people groups and the distinctions and connections between them.
The importance of the Ethnological method in the study is the discovery of themes
leading to the cultural behavior of young-adults in the viral meme. Therefore, we, the
Researcher will able to find out how these teenagers adapt the culture of "Good vibes
lang" in Brgy. Addition Hills. In this way, we can spread awareness about the phrase
"pano mo nasabe" that could motivate individuals to change their behavior or follow up
on their convictions. In addition, this may lead us to know the reason on why these
people keep on using "pano mo nasabe" and how they understand this phrase.

Furthermore, Ethnological method would help us change the toxic traits of these
young-adults in regards of copying or adapting things they just saw, heard, and read
without knowing the meaning or the origin of it. Without a doubt, this is one of the
reason why some people are being called ignorant, the action says it all. And also, just
because they find it "funny" they already considered it as a laughing matter without
knowing that there's a crime behind it.
II. SUMMARY OF THE EXTRACTED DATA

Theme Extracted Statement

Theme: Understanding the behind story “As far as I know, when it became
of the viral meme “pano mo nasabe?” popular it became a norm in having
conversations”
 Lack of knowledge
“Others might know the meaning but
others interpret it as a meme.”

“The community relates to the meme and

that might be the reason of why they
understand it.”

“For me, I think the people in Brgy.

Addition Hills doesn’t understand the
story behind the meme since they just
keep on using the phrase. But in my
family, we talk about it and how memes
are funny but some memes has a dark
story behind. I guess majority doesn’t
know what the meme is about and just
jumping in to the bandwagon.”

“Para aking maintidihan at malaman ang

kwento ay pinanood ko ito sa intertnet at
sa facebook at youtube at ibang pang
social accounts.”

“According to the news, a guy name

robert nocos, was found guilty after
stabbing a cashier to death, for me,
maybe the origin of the word “pano mo
nasabe” came to his mind because the
interviewers have no concrete evidence
in supporting their claim against him.”

“Syempre they do not understand what is

behind the story of that meme. Kasi sa
community tulad ng sa inyo di
masyadong seryoso when it comes sa
ganyang itsura na meme eh. However
kung sakaling naintindihan nila yung story
ng nasa meme na yun syempre magiging
alerto sila from now on. Makikita nila yun
Marami
pang tao ang pwedeng makagawa niyan.”

Theme: Difficulties in understanding the “It's not a big deal for people because it's
viral meme of “pano mo nasabe” just a meme.”

 Immaturity “It’s difficult when you receive the term

 “It’s just a joke” mindset 'pano mo nasabe' because you don't
know if the person is being serious or
sarcastic.”

“I ask the person who said that of he or

she was serious and if no, I’ll just laugh it
off.”

“Since memes are fun, people tend to say

that those who are correcting them are
being too killjoy or serious and that it is
just a joke or just for laughs. When in fact
the stories behind some memes are what
is really happening in the society, since
usually the memes are from news, and
it's like we chose to ignore the issues and
make a joke out of it instead.”

“Ang mga sagabal na aking naranasan sa

pag intindi sa meme na "paano mo
nasabe" ay nung una ay hindi ko alam
ang pinagmulan at storya nyan ngunit
aking paring ginagamit sa pag salita.”

“Some people will, find it as a joke,

because of the way he said it, because
well all in this vast world, some people do
not take things seriously, and because of
the growing popularity of memes in social
media, some people mistaken memes as
a form of a joke, but regardless to it,
many people doesn’t really know what
happened in that incident because they’re
focused on what is hilarious in their own
perspective.”

“The difficulties understanding that

meme, is that ginawa na siyang joke so
mahirap na siyang intindihin ng mga tao.
Di nila seseryosohin yung true story noon
because of social media. Pangalawa
mahirap siyang intindihin kasi meme na
siya eh. We all know na yung meme
ginagamit for fun. Problema saatin
ngayon kasi napaka immature natin mag
isip. Yung murder, dat di ginagawang
joke.”

The respondents showed the culture of “good vibes lang” according to Gillan Lasic,
sometimes, we cross the line of apathy, unable to discern what’s inappropriate and not.

viral meme origin of a particular meme.”
 Influence
 Fact-Finding “It is difficult for you to understand if you
don’t know how it went viral.”

“I know the news so I don’t have

difficulties in understanding meme.”

“So I can understand it deeply I research

it and know all the facts and significant of
it via watching videos.”

“By understanding and watching the news

carefully, because one wrong information
can destroy your own perspective on
what is the truth, memes are fun, but
sometimes they’re overlapping the true
scenario of what really happened.”

“Mahirap siyang iface kung ikaw ang

innocent dahil marami sa tao ngayon
mabilis mapaniwala at mabilis
maimpluwensyahan. Lalo na yung meme
na yun since pwede na siya maging
source of kalokohan. Pero di rin
mawawala yung abilidad ng isang tao na
maging curious sa isang bagay. So by
curiosity, pwede niyang isearch yung
behind what is the true meaning of that
meme.”
“I don't want to be called kill joy since I
myself enjoy memes. But then I know my
limitations and I know that I should be
mindful of everything that I do, say or
share in social media.”

underlying story behind the memes. It's
okay to laugh to forget our problems but
let us know the limitations of what we
make fun of.”

“It’s famous on social media that’s why

the cyber space people say it in real life.”

“The first thing that came to my mind in

the phrase” pano mo nasabe” is that
you’ll say it on a person that has no proof
over their claim against you. And a viral
meme is popular because many people
find it funny.”

“Ang aking lamang masasabi ay ang viral

meme na "paano mo nasabe" ay nung
una hindi ko pa alam ang totoong video
ay akoy natutuwa ngunit noong aking
napanood ay nag bago ang aking
pananaw na kung saan aking napagtanto
na may mga bagay na ginagawang
katatawanan at meron ding bagay na
hindi dapat pagtawanan dahil sa kwento
neto.”

“Para saakin syempre bago ko munang

gawing joke yung meme, nakapag gather
na ko ng info about that case. So alam ko
na yung story ng meme na yun. Pero
after nun dahil sa mga meme na
ginagawa ng mga tao these days yung
linyang "pano mo nasabe" nagagamit ko
na rin as pambara or pang joke sa mga
nakakausap ko.”

The respondents showed their idea towards the origin of the viral meme “pano mo
nasabe”, wherein Roberto Nocos stabbed a cashier registrar and a waitress to death.
We should be sensitive and know our limitations.

Theme: Conflicts in saying “pano mo “Sometimes you are indirectly smart
nasabe?” shaming someone when having a proper
conversation.”
 Arguments
 Bullying “It can cause conflict between the two
persons talking because one person
might be speaking seriously while the
other one is being sarcastic.”

“I don't think we can encounter anything

in that sense. Since it is just a meme, I
don't think it is a proper solution to a
problem. I do think though that it can
cause fights especially when someone is
serious about something then the
response is that. It's kind of irritating.”

“While using the meme "pano mo nasabi"

it can cause misunderstanding for some
so we should say what the appropriate
words are and be formal.”
“I will give you 2 problems that I
encountered while saying “pano mo
nasabe” first is that they’ll think that
you’re joking and they will not take you
seriously, second is that, it has a violent
reaction to other people because they
think that you’re making fun of them or
you’re bluffing them.”

“Ang mga problema na maidudulot ng

pag sabi ng salitang " paano mo nasabe"
ay kapag sinabi mo ito sa isang tao ay
pwde nila ito mamistunderstood na
nagdudulot ng problema kayat dapat sa
bawat na sasabihin ay pag isipan muna.”

“I can be a bully by saying "pano mo

nasabe". Yung problem na maeecounter
ko is that pwede kong dalhin sarili ko in
danger. For example nasabi ko siya sa
mga serious na usapan like meeting,
hearing the opinion of others then ang
reply ko "pano mo nasabe" so thats the
problem. Dahil sa mga meme yung "pano
mo nasabe" dapat pangseryoso pero
dahil nga sa mga memes it turns out as a
joke mala serious matter man o hindi.”
The respondents showed a conflict towards each other because of different
understanding or perspective towards the meme. It is alright to make jokes as long as
they don’t insult or discriminate anybody.

Theme: The essence of understanding “In order to be aware of sensitive topics
the viral meme that must not be used for banter.”

 Social Awareness “Other people need to understand the

viral meme that is not only a meme, but
the person who said that phrase is a
criminal, Other people should not make
fun of it.”

“For me, if you keep receiving that kind of

meme in real life, that will be a problem
because it just simply means that people
don’t take you seriously, while on the
other hand, to the one who keeps saying
that meme, he or she should stop before
misunderstandings can happen.”

“Because we should be aware and

mindful of what is happening. We should
not be blind of what is happening in the
society. We should not sugarcoat or
cover our eyes to the issues and we
should face it properly.”

“Many people should understand the

importance of knowing the story behind
something, i know that it is funny, but let’s
not disregard the fact that Robert nocos,
stabbed a person to death, we are
disregarding the bigger picture and
focusing on the less important one
because of what he said that capture our
attetion, but let’s take a closer look on
what really matters and the news that
they’re giving so that people like us will
be aware of the possible dangers in our
society.”

“Dahil sa bawat viral meme ay may ibat

ibang kwento pwdeng ang kwento ay
masaya at meron ding kwentong masama
na nagdudulot na dapat iwasan ang
pagsabi neto.”

“For me they really need to understand

that meme kasi una sa lahat is behind
that meme is a serious matter. Behind
that meme is something na kailangan
natin intindihin. Kailangan natin maging
aware kasi maraming namamatay sa
murder. It can be anywhere eh. So we
must be aware muna. Pangalawa
kailangan maging mature enough tayo at
maging insensitive. Di to nakakatuwa
kailangan maging sensitive tayo at all
cost. Lastly, that line is dangerous dahil
naging joke na siya. When it comes to
serious matters like suggesting, or
hearing one side to another paniguradong
lalabas ang linyang "pano mo nasabe".
So kailangan yung meme na yun must be
taken seriously. Sa lahat ng wala pang
alam sa meme na yun must be educated
ng mga may alam.”

According to the respondents a lot of young adults are not aware so we should spread
awareness and stop ignorance so it won’t happen again in the future. Sensitive topics
like crime must take it seriously and not to be used for banter or meme because it gives
negative effect like misunderstanding in communicating with other person and also can
cause negative impact to the victim and the family of the victims.

III. SYNTHESIS

Nowadays, the internet is often used by young-adults and most of them can’t live
without going through it for a day. These young-adults would care less whether what
they’re adapting through the internet is right or wrong. Internet memes are known and
seen in every social media site, it is called a trend. Little did they know, what one person
finds funny could be offensive to another. Everything on the internet that goes viral is
considered as entertaining although they know zero facts about it. Awareness among
these memes should be raised in order to share the meaning behind these memes and
prevent the promotion of ignorance. We are often active on the internet rather than
watching news in the television which can give us proper knowledge and facts.
