HP Lovecraft was an amazing author.

All of the
stories that he wrote were about the nightmares that
haunted him in he had during his dreams. Lovecraft
lived a tragic life. His parents both went insane and he
himself was a very disturbed person. My three traits
that I chose for Lovecraft are detail, dialogue, and
sensory. Lovecraft used all of these traits throughout
his pieces of literature and it made his stories more
effective.

Lovecraft used a lot of detail in his writing. When

he used great detail his stories became a lot more
descriptive and effective to the reader. My author
tends to describe objects or places more than anything
else. Like in “The Outsider” he describes the entire
castle and the army, as well as everything he sees
around him. Also in “The Music of Erich Zann” he
describes what the man looked like and he even
describes what the man’s music sounded like. When
Lovecraft described things it makes you feel like you
are in the story and you are in the same situation as
the character. You want to leave the castle just like
the character does. Some examples of this is when he
first sees Erich Zann in “The Music of Erich Zann” he
describes him as, “He was a small, lean, bent person,
with shabby clothes, blue eyes, grotesque, satyr-like
face, and nearly bald head; and at my first words
seemed both angered and frightened”. In “The
Outsider” when he describes the monster he sees he
says; “The nightmare was quick to come; for as I
entered, there occurred immediately one of the most
terrifying demonstrations I had ever conceived.
Scarcely had I crossed the sill when there descended
upon the whole company a sudden and unheralded fear
of hideous intensity, distorting every face and evoking
the most horrible screams from nearly every throat”
The detail in this writing is amazing.

In Lovecraft’s case Dialogue is a different story.

He doesn’t use dialogue in his writings at all, but that is
why it is so important. So the element of dialogue isn’t
used, therefore it helps the story be better.
Dialogue goes a long with detail in a way. When he
doesn’t use dialogue to show how the people interact he
instead uses very descriptive words to take the place
in “The Music of Erich Zann” when he talks about how
he and Erich interact instead of saying direct quotes.
He says, “I told him I wanted to hear him play”. This
effects the reader. To me it makes more sense.
Listening to a conversation or having a conversation
explained to you are two different things. I personally
think that the second one is more effective. Some
people may also think that this may be a bad thing.
This is totally a personal opinion. It depends on how
you look at the story. If when you read a story if you
want to feel like a witness, like you were there
watching the whole thing; then you want dialogue. If
you want it to feel like your Grandfather is telling the
story to you, like you’re not in the story like your
hearing the story then you would love this author.

One last element of literature that Lovecraft used

was sensory. Sensory is about using your senses.
Lovecraft did this often. He likes to give as much
detail as possible so the reader can have as much
effect from the experience of reading his writing as
possible. When he describes the music that Erich
plays that is sensory because he is hearing it. When he
describes the castle that he sees that is also sensory.
This makes the reader feel like they are in the book
just looking, feeling, smelling, hearing, and tasting the
same things that the character is. When he uses
sensory it is a lot on sights, noises, or occasionally
feelings. Like in this entry “Outside, across the putrid
moat and under the dark mute trees” it uses a lot of
sight sensory detail. This helps the reader a lot.
Another example which is also in “The Outsider” that is
similar to the last example is “The cries were shocking;
and as I stood in the brilliant apartment alone and
dazed, listening to their vanishing echoes” this is a
great example of using sensory detail on sound. It tells
about the weird cries he hears.

Lovecraft has written some of the best stories I

have ever heard. I really don’t think too many people
know about him or his writings. If people did then they
would be all over his stories. If Lovecraft’s stories
were just a little bit more publicized then he would be
much better known. These three traits are very
important and without them in his writings they
wouldn’t be nearly as good.
