Standardizing Wastewater Treatment for Rural Ponds in State of Punjab
10, ‘The treated wastewater (BOD <30 mg/l) can be used for the irrigation of non-edible crops,
if to be used for edible crop the TDS and fecal coliform/ E-coli concentration needs to be
taken into consideration.
11, During the study the fecal coliform/ E-coli concentration in the treated wastewater could
not be measured, the treated wastewater can be used for edible crop i nn if the fecal
coliform/ E-coli concentration falls within the permissible limit,
12. The impact of discharge of treated wastewater on the soil and groundwater quality should
be assessed periodically
13. The seepage from the storage tank can be allowed only if treated wastewater quality
parameters are withia prescribed permissible limits.

7. RECOMMENDATIONS
‘There are some recommendation to improve the overall efficiency of units:
1, Screen unit should be cleaned manually if any clogging is observed.
2, The short circuiting of flow in digestion tank (first well) can be avoided by providing a bend
pipe at the inlet opening in downward direction, At the outlet also, a bend pipe can be
provided with opening towards bottom.
3. The removal of solids from the digestion tank needs to be done at least once in a month
(preferably once in 15 days) to avoid the entry of solids into skimming tank.
4. The suspended materials from skimming tank needs to be removed more frequently (once in
15 days) from the skimming tank.
5. The cleaning of the third well (now it is known as settling tank) should be carried out more
frequently (at least once in a week) than other two tanks. If any turbulence in the primary
tank is observed due to formation of methane, it means it requires immediate cleaning.
6. If wastewater flow through open drains, one ure seulting tank is proposed after the third
well to remove the excess suspensied soiiés entering into the system
7. The depth of water in oxic should not be allowed more than 1.5 meter (the depth
po
to be taken from the ievel of inlet pipe) in case depth increases the extra water should be
pumped out.
8. The bottom layer of the oxidation ponds should be impermeable, seepage of water to
groundwater should be avoided. The inlet and outlet of the pond should be diagonally
opposite in direction,
9. The sludge removed from all the tanks needs to be handled as per the guidelines laid down
by PPCB from time to time. )
