EOS R now has Eye-detection Servo AF

Canon has updated the firmware for its EOS R full-frame
mirrorless camera. Version 1.2.0 enables eye detection when using
the Servo AF or Movie Servo AF settings. Sony already offers
a similar feature and Nikon is expected to offer it soon for its
Z series via a firmware update. There are also other minor
improvements in Canon’s firmware tweak. See bit.ly/eosrfirmware.

Technique BENEFITS OF MIRRORLESS

Better focusing
There was a time when the dedicated phase-detection
AF sensor in a DSLR gave it an advantage over a
mirrorless camera, but that’s decreasingly the case now.
Mirrorless cameras use their imaging sensor for
autofocusing, with some having embedded phase-
detection pixels and others using contrast detection.
These contrast-detection systems are much improved
over the versions in the earliest mirrorless cameras. In
addition, some cameras use a hybrid system that
combines phase detection with contrast detection for
the best of both worlds.

sense, but the image looked great – so I’ve taken the shot. Subsequently, I find I
experiment more with exposure with mirrorless cameras than I ever do with
SLRs. I also love that some camera manufacturers allow you to assign
exposure-compensation control to the manual focus ring (or a third ring) of a
lens. It makes adjusting and assessing exposure more of a part of the creative
process of photography.

just can’t go (at least without looking ridiculous).

When I first switched to mirrorless in 2015, many
of my photographer friends laughed at my live-view
technique, claiming it wasn’t ‘professional’. Now they’re
all at it! I’ve not shot a photo through an OVF/EVF
for years, and hopefully I’ll never have to again. As
live view (and EVF) give instant feedback to exposure
compensation, aperture and so on, I rarely have to
waste time ‘chimping’ to make sure I’ve got the shot.
Although I still use big, fast prime lenses, switching
from carrying two Nikon D4s around all day has
obvious benefits. Not only could I barely fit through
doors, my back would be in pieces after shooting every
wedding. The cameras I use depend on the situation. At
a typical wedding I use a Sony A9 and A7 III; however I
will switch to an A7R III if more resolution is required.
My favourite lenses are the Sony Zeiss 35mm and
50mm f/1.4 and the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8.

Use silent shutter for candid

from certain types of LED and

are certainly susceptible.

Spider holster
To get the most flexibility when using live view, use a spider holster
instead of a strap or braces. This way you are only limited by the
length of your arms, rather than the length of your strap.

With firmware Version 5.0, Sony has made
impressive updates to its flagship camera.
I’m not sure it’s entirely a case of ‘Alpha 9

certainly add some very useful strings to its
bow. As a result, the Alpha 9 makes an even
stronger case for itself as the most advanced

Alongside Animal Eye AF, which is sure to

Of course, a lot has happened in the two

Protecting your camera
kit at home and away
You’ve invested time and money into your photography so why wouldn’t you invest in protecting your
camera and equipment?

If you’re shooting a landscape, wildlife or street photography, whether in the UK or abroad, the risk of
theft is always present. Accidents can also happen, whether its your fault or someone else’s – dropping
a lens or knocking over a tripod are easy but can be expensive mistakes to make.

As well as human error, there’s mother nature to deal with too – rain, sand, sea and temperature all
have the potential to damage your kit in the pursuit of the perfect shot.

Amateur Photographer Insurance Services can be there to help protect against the things that
threaten your photography:

Theft Accidental Worldwide

(excludes from a vehicle,
unless option added
Damge cover
to policy) (excludes wear and tear) (20 days during any one
period of insurance – options
available to extend cover)
