Public transportation in Colombia includes over 66,000 buses that provide 190 million trips annually. By determining the cause of the failure, the transport industry may be able to prevent such failures and reduce repair time and costs. The study examines data from the bus company and uses guidelines from a failure analysis textbook to identify the type and source of failure, and categorize the failure's development time, stage of evolution, and consequences. The analysis found the failure to be non-catastrophic and sudden due to fracture. It also determined that gentle driving can help extend the machine's lifespan.

    Failure analysis of a solder joint between the fourth gear of an Isuzu bus LV-150 and its
    synchronizer.

    Abstract.

    This study determines the principal causes of failure in a solder joint between the fourth gear of a
    public transport bus (Isuzu LV-150) and its synchronizer. Public transport in Colombia makes more
    than 190 million of travels per year and has 66.824 units of buses all over the country. After reading
    this research paper, transport industry may be able to prevent this failures from happening and in
    that order, reduce the time and money they spend repairing them. For the research, data about the
    operation and manufacturing process of the mechanism was provided by the company which owns
    the bus. Then, by the guidelines exposed in the book ‘Failure analysis. Lecture notes’ (E. Mora
    Espejo, 2012) the type and the source of failure were determined. Finally, the development time of
    the failure, its stage of evolution and its consequences were categorized according to the same
    methodology. After reading this essay, it will be understandable why these failures are a non-
    catastrophic, sudden failures from fracture, and the importance of a friendly driving will be
    described in order to extend the lifespan of the machine.
