Dear Parents and Guardians of Roosevelt 5*-grade Students, Itis time to begin writing state reports. This is an exciting project that all Sth grade students have the opportunity to complete. We will oo the requirements in detail in class, and I will give students many chances to ask lots of questions. The state report has three main parts or projects. The first part is a written report that we will work on frequently, but will not complete, in class. Students have been given packets to complete with information about their states. I have obtained a set of books that is helpful for research, and I will provide time and help in class to do some of the written portion. However, work may be and should be done at home through different research sources, including the Internet. ‘The second part or project, to be completed entirely at home, is a State Float. The idea is to use a shoebox (or a box of similar size and shape) and decorate it with information about the chosen state. Since this assignment will need to be done at home, I will schedule a few no-homework days over the next few weeks. Students should use those days to work on state floats, as welll as reports. Also, remember that we have several minimum days ahead of us. The third part of the state report consists of a persuasive essay in which students will attempt to make readers want to visit their states. This essay will not need to be terribly long but will need to be well written, well organized, and well thought out. All students will be given information in writing about expectations for these essays. ‘All portions of the state report are due on . Each day that a portion of the report is late will lower the grade on that portion by one full grade. This will give us about FOUR weeks to finish this project. This should be plenty of time provided students do not wait until the last minute to get started. Please sign the bottom portion of this letter and return it to me so that I know you are aware of this project. Feel free to ask any questions you have concerning the state report. The second page of this letter shows the requirements and point values for the first two projects and is for you to keep. Signature of parent or guardian oft.
