Task 1

As it is required, relevant script was run and results is shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 given
below. Figure 1 represents the permeability distribution, while Figure 2 indicates the oil
saturation distribution for 200, 400 and 600 days after vertical water injection:

If Figure 1 is analyzed, it can be seen that middle layer is defined as highly permeable layer with
covering lower permeable layer from top and bottom sides. In Figure 2 represents the oil saturation
distribution. As it is pointed out that in highly permeable zone, e.g. middle layer displacement takes
place quicker from the start. So almost more than half of the oil is drifted from the highly
permeable middle zone. On the other side, good sweep efficiency is observed in the bottom layer,
while upper layer demonstrates poor sweep efficiency in contrast to bottom layer. It can be
clarified by taking into account the effect of capillary and viscous forces as considering 2 phases
displacement, although for this case the effect of capillary forces can be assumed as negligible
rather than gravity forces effect. This is because flow is horizontal. Furthermore, this situation can
also be happen due gravity forces effect, so it controls from high permeable layer with medium to
vigorous vertical transmission as water injection started. Effect of gravity forces is changed as
highest from high permeable (e.g. medium) to low permeable (e.g. bottom) zone that results in
good recovery. It should be underlined that oil recovery from bottom layer is almost reached to its
highest amount in 400 days.
Task 2_a:
After required modification was done for task 2_a, result was like in Figure 3. It can be said that
bottom layer of reservoir drains faster to its highest maximum amount with leading earlier water
breakthrough. This situation can be explained due to gravity flow from top layers. In upper and
middle layer water can’t flow throughout whole grid layer more effectively, though for each of
three zones the vertical connectivity is same as in the Task 1. Overall, lower recovery and poor
sweep efficiency is dominated for this case.
