BSEDLaunched in 1983, this remarkable presentation of the Cyriax method was an immediate
success. Valuable information previously hidden in large and unwieldy textbooks suddenly
became easy to understand. Using a streamlined text with superb sequences of full colour
illustrations, it allowed the reader rapid access to the essence of Cyriax’s unique approach

But orthopaedic medicine continues to develop, and the Cyriax school is playing an
active part in this process. As a result, many changes to theory and practice have taken
place since the ‘Illustrated Manual’ was first conceived. To reflect these, the new edition

same, both text and illustrations have been completely overhauled.
For the text of this new edition, numerous improvements and supplementary details
have been included to give a greater recognition of alternative diagnoses and treatments.
Different treatment approaches and new conditions are considered, doubtful areas
clarified, statements refined, new technology and equipment assessed, and terminolog:
updated. Sports injuries now account for a high proportion of problems in the orthopaedic
medicine clinic and are given greater prominence. The result is a broader, more balanced
account, less dogmatic than its predecessor, in keeping with the discriminating approach of
the 1990s.
The illustrations are an integral part of the presentation and they too have been given
their share of attention. Photographs of the examination sequences have been replaced by
drawings, and now often include clear directional indicators showing at a glance each
successive movement. Many of the illustrations have been re-sized for clarity, and
additional drawings and photographs added. The effect is to strengthen the visual impact
while focussing attention on the essential features.
This fully updated and re-designed edition remains the indispensable guide to the
Cyriax method. No further recommendation will be needed for those who are familiar with
the first edition. Anyone new to the book will find no better way of learning about the
approach and technique of one of the acknowledged modern masters of orthopaedic
medicine.
