Surahs of the Quran (Sahih and Weak Virtues)

The whole of the Quran is a blessing and a mercy from Allah, and there is great blessing and a
guidance in reciting and learning the Quran. We know of many Sahih (authentic) narrations that come
from the Prophet Muhammad (‫)صلى هللا عليه و سلم‬. Unfortunately, over time, people have innovated
attributes to the various surahs that are not proven from authentic sources. There are many examples,
one such practice is reciting Surah Yaseen when someone is dying or has died, there is absolutely no
authentic narration to support such a practice. In order to bring a correct understanding, we have given
the various narrations, both authentic (sahih) and weak, so that the reader may benefit and gain an
informed understanding. We have relied upon the works of Shaikh Albani in regard on various
authentic surahs.

Please note not all hadeeth on each surah are given, only some of the main ones are given. This work
has been taken from the-finalrevelation.blogspot.com (May Allah reward them).
1 SURAH AL FATIHA
SAHEEH HADEETH ON ITS VIRTUES:

Ibn ‘Abbas narrated: “While Jibril was with the Messenger of Allah, he heard a noise from above. Jibril
lifted his sight to the sky and said: “This is a door in the Heavens being opened, and it has never been
opened before now.” An Angel descended from that door and came to the Prophet and said: “Receive
the glad tidings of two lights that you have been given, which no other Prophet before you was given:
the Opening of the Book (Al Fatiha), and the last verses of ‘al-Baqarah.’ You will not read a letter of
them except that you will gain its benefit.” [Sahih Muslim, Sunan Al Nisaee 912, 'Sahih at-Targhib wat-
Tarhib'; # 1456]

Prophet (s.a.w) said "Nothing like it (Al fatiha) has been revealed in the Tawrah (Torah), nor the Injeel
(gospel), nor in the Zabur (the Pslams), or the Furqaan. And it is the seven oft-repeated verses and
the Mighty Qur'an which i have been given. [2884 Tirmidhi, BOOK ON VIRTUES OF THE QUR’AN
Chapter 1: Virtues al-Fatihah, Agreed Upon]

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (s.a.w), who said:
A prayer performed by someone who has not recited the Essence of the Quran (1) during it is deficient
(and he repeated the word three times), incomplete. Someone said to Abu Hurayrah: [Even though]
we are behind the imam? (2) He said: Recite it to yourself, for I have heard the Prophet (may the
blessings and peace of Allah be up on him) say: Allah (mighty and sublime be He), had said: I have
divided prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he
has asked for. When the servant says: Al-hamdu lillahi rabbi l-alamin (3), Allah (mighty and sublime
be He) says: My servant has praised Me. And when he says: Ar-rahmani r-rahim (4), Allah (mighty
and sublime be He) says: My servant has extolled Me, and when he says: Maliki yawmi d-din (5), Allah
says: My servant has glorified Me - and on one occasion He said: My servant has submitted to My
power. And when he says: Iyyaka na budu wa iyyaka nasta in (6), He says: This is between Me and
My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. And when he says: Ihdina s-sirata l-
mustaqim, siratal ladhina an amta alayhim ghayril-maghdubi alayhim wa la d-dallin (7), He says: This
is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. (1) Surat al-Fatihah, the first surah
(chapter) of the Qur'an. (2) i.e. standing behind the imam (leader) listening to him reciting al-Fatihah.
(3) "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds." (4) "The Merciful, the Compassionate". (5) "Master of the
Day of Judgement". (6) "It is You we worship and it is You we ask for help". (7) "Guide us to the straight
path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favors, not of those against whom You are
angry, nor of those who are astray". [Sahih Muslim, Malik, at-Tirmidhi, Abu-Dawud, an-Nasa'i and Ibn
Majah, Hadis Qudsi 8]

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Mu'alla:While I was praying, the Prophet called me but I did not respond to his
call. Later I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I was praying." He said, "Didn't Allah say: 'O you who believe!
Give your response to Allah (by obeying Him) and to His Apostle when he calls you'?" (8.24) He then
said, "Shall I not teach you the most superior Surah in the Qur'an?" He said, '(It is), 'Praise be to Allah,
the Lord of the worlds. ' (i.e., Surat Al-Fatiha) which consists of seven repeatedly recited Verses and
the Magnificent Qur'an which was given to me." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 6, Book 61, Hadith 528, also see
Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 227]

Surah Al Fatiha is also used as Ruqyah for healing and treatment. [See Sahih Muslim Book 26, Hadith
5458 and Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 6, Book 61, Hadith 529]
WEAK NARRATIONS :

Please note, some weak narrations may or may not have certain acceptable content.

“The Fatiha of the Book is above (in merit) to what no other part of the book (Quran) can reach. And
if the fatiha was to be placed on one scale and the Qura’an to be placed on another, then the fatiha
will outweight the Qura’an seven times [Very weak, see Silsilah Ahadeeth al Dae’efa:3996, For another
kind of weak narration see 3997 also Dae’ef Al targheeb wa tarheeb :347 , Jami’ Al sagheer :3952
and others]

The Fatiha of the book is a cure of the poison [Silsilah Ahadeeth Da'eefa : 3997]

When you lie your side on your bed [getting ready to sleep] and you recited [The opening chapter of
the Quran] and [Qul huwallahu Ahad - Surah Ikhlaas] : then you have been secured of everything
except death. [Da'eef Al Targheeb wa Tarheeb :347]

The Fatiha of the book (quran) and the Ayatul Kursi ; no slave will ever recite them in a house ; except
that no evil eye from a Jinn or human will ever affect them in that day [Da'eef - Jami' Al Sagheer :
3952]

Note: Even though this particular hadeeth is Da'eef, we do have sahih hadeeth affirming that ayatul
Kursi is used as a protection and so are the three Quls (surah Ikhlas, Al Falaq and Al Naas]

The Fatiha of the book is a medicine for all diseases [Da'eef Al Jami' as Sagheer 3951]

The Fatiha is equal to a third of Quran [Da'eef - Jami' al Sagheer - 3949]

2 SURAH AL BAQARAH
SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

Abu Mas'ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:I heard the Prophet (s.a.w ) saying,
"He who recites the two Ayat at the end of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him." [Al- Bukhari
and Muslim, Riyad as Swaliheen Book 9, Hadith 1017, Sunan Abu Dawood 1397]

It was narrated from Hudhaifah that: The Prophet (s.a.w) recited Surat Al-Baqarah, Al 'Imran and An-
Nisa' in one rak'ah, and he did not reach any verse that spoke of mercy but he asked Allah for it, nor
any verse that spoke of punishment but he asked Allah for protection therefrom [ Sunan Al Nasaee
1009]
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) saying:
"Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah
is recited." [Muslim, Riyad us swaliheen Book 9, Hadith 1018].

An-Nawwas bin Sam'an (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah
(s.a.w) saying, "The Qur'an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection
preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-'Imran arguing on behalf of those who applied them."
[Muslim, Riyad us swaliheen Book 9, Hadith 992].

Prophet (s.a.w) said “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi (verse # 255) after every obligatory prayer, then
there is nothing between him and his entrance into Paradise except his death.” [Al Nasaee, 'Sahih al-
Jami''; # 6464]

From Nu'maan ibn Basheer (r.a) who said that the Prophet (s.a.w) said " “Verily, Allah Wrote a Book
one thousand years before He Created the Heavens and the Earth; from this Book descended the last
two verses of ‘al-Baqarah.’ These verses are not recited for three nights in any home except that no
devil can come near it.” [Jami' Al Tirmidhi, 'Sahih al-Jami''; # 1799]

Ali radiallahu `anhu said: “About a man who did not read the last three ayats of Surah Al-Baqarah at
night, I can not say that he is intelligent”

[Ref: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, hadith: 29927, Sunan Darimi, hadith: 3552/3384, At-Tibyan, pgs.
205-205 & Nataijul Afkar, vol.3 pgs.90-91.]

WEAK NARRATIONS :

Two verses in the Qur'an; they are the Qur'an and they are cures, and they are from those which Allah
loves. These are the last two verses of Surah Al Baqarah [ Silsilah Ahaadeeth Al Da'eefa : 154]

Whoever recites Suratul Baqarah, he will be crowned with a crown in paradise [Fabricated - Silsilah
Ahadeeth Al Da'eefa 4633]

3 SURAH AALE 'IMRAAN

SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

Abu Umama said he heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) say: Recite the Qur'an, for
on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright
ones, al-Baqara and Surah Al 'Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or
two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqara,
for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot
confront it. (Mu'awiya said: It has been conveyed to me that here Batala means magicians.) [Sahih
Muslim,Book 4, Hadith 1757]
WEAK NARRATIONS :

Whoever recites during the Friday, the Surah in which the family of Imraan is mentioned then Allah
and his angels send their peace and blessings to the person until the sun [of that friday] sets [Al
Da'eefa 415]

Allah's most magnificent name, of which when used to implore Him, His response is found in this verse
in Surah Aaale Imraan : Say" Oh Allah! Possessor of the Kingdom , you give the Kingdom to whom
you will....[to the end of the verse] [Al Da'eefa 2772]

If anyone recites the end of the surah Aale Imraan at night the reward for a night spent in prayer will
be recorded for him [Da'eef Mishkaat al Masaabih : 2112]

Whoever recites Aale Imran during Friday; the angels invoke blessings to the person until night time.
[Da'eef Mishkat al Masaabih : 2113]

There is no person who will be on a riding beast and having problems, except that when he says into
its ear " Do they seek other than the religion of Allah, while to him submitted all creatures in the
heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, And to him (Allah) shall they all be returned." [Surah
Aalem Imran verse 83], except that the animal will be calm by the Will of Allah [Da'eef Al Kalaam
Tayyiba : 177]

Allah will never repulse a slave who stood up at night and opened his recitation with Surah Al Baqarah
and Aale Imran [Da'eef Jami' as Sagheer 5063]

4 SURAH TAHA
Taken from Shaykh Saleh al-Munnajid

SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

1) It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning Bani
Israil (al-Isra), al-Kahf, Maryam, Taha and al-Anbiya: They are among the best of the earliest ones
that I learned by heart. Narrated by al-Bukhari (4994).

Al-Bayhaqi said in Shu’ab al-Eeman: He was referring to the superiority of these surahs because of
what they contain of stories of the Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) and the nations.

And they were among the first surahs to be revealed at the beginning of Islam, because they are
Makkan surahs, and they were among the first parts of the Quran to be recited and memorized. End
quote. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Bari (8/388):
What Ibn Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) meant was that they were among the first parts of
the Quran that he learned, and that they have a special virtue because they contain stories of the
Prophets (peace and blessing be upon them) and the nations. End quote.

2) It was narrated from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The greatest name of Allah appears in three surahs
of the Quran: in al-Baqarah, Al ‘Imran and Taha.” Narrated by Ibn Majah (3856) and al-Hakim (1/686);
classed as hasan (sound) by al-Albani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (746).

He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: With regard to the words of al-Qasim ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman
(the one who narrated it from Abu Umamah) that the greatest name is found in the verse (interpretation
of the meaning): “And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living,
the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)” [Taha20:111] in Surah Taha, I could not find
anything to support it. It is more likely in my view that it is in the verse at the beginning of the surah:
“Verily, I am Allah! La ilaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I)” [Taha 20:14], and that
is in accordance with some saheeh hadeeths (authentic narrations. See: al-Fath (11/225) and Saheeh
Abi Dawood (1341). End quote.

WEAK NARRATIONS :

1) It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah, may He be blessed and exalted, recited Taha
and Yaseen one thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and when the angels
heard the Quran they said: Glad tidings to the nation to whom this is revealed, glad tidings to the
hearts that carry this, glad tidings to the tongues that speak it.” Narrated by al-Darimi (2/547). The
editor said: Its isnad (chain of narrators) is very weak. Ahmad said of ‘Umar ibn Hafs ibn Dhakwan:
We rejected his hadeeth and regarded him as very weak. In al-Mu’jam al-Awsat (5/133) it says: Ibn
Hibban said in al-Majrooheen (1/208): This is a fabricated text. Ibn al-Jawzi said likewise in al-
Mawdoo’at (1/110). Ibn Katheer said in Tafseer al-Quran il-Azeem (5/271): It is weird. Al-Albani said
in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah (1248): It is munkar (denounced). See also al-Kamil (1/216) and Lisan al-
Meezan (1/114).

2) It was narrated that Ma’qil ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Learn the Quran, accept as permissible what it
permits, regard as forbidden what it forbids, follow its guidance and do not reject anything in it.
Whatever you are confused about in it, refer it to Allah and to those who are in authority after I am
gone, so that they may tell you. Believe in the Tawrat and Injeel and Zaboor, and what the Prophets
brought from their Lord, but be content with the Quran and what it contains of clarity, for it is an
intercessor whose intercession will be accepted. Each verse will have light on the Day of Resurrection.
I have been given Surah al-Baqarah among the early Revelation, and I have been given Taha and
Taseen-Meems and Ha-Meems from the tablets of Moosa and I have been given the Opening of the
Book (al-Fatihah) from beneath the Throne.

Narrated by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak (1/757) and he said: This hadeeth has a saheeh isnad although
they (al-Bukhari and Mulsim) did not narrate it. Also narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer
(20/225). Classed as da’eef by al-Albani in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah (2826) and by Ibn Hibban in al-
Majrooheen (2/65).
3) It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say in his du’a
(supplication): “O Lord of Taha and Yaseen, O Lord of the Holy Quran.”

Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Majmoo’ al-Fatawa (5/173-174): There is no
difference of opinion among the scholars that this hadeeth is a lie against the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). End quote.

4) “Whoever reads Taha will be given the reward of the Muhajireen (Emigrants) and the Ansar
(Helpers) on the Day of Resurrection.” This was quoted by al-Zamakhshari and al-Baydawi with regard
to the virtues of Surah Taha, but it is a fabricated hadeeth. See: al-Kashf al-Ilahi by al-Tarabulsi
(1/178).

With regard to what you asked about the virtue of reading it three times every night, I could not find
that in the books of the Sunnah, and I did not even find it in the books of mawdoo’ (fabricated) reports.
Nothing concerning that has been proven from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him), so you should be careful and avoid that, and strive to follow the saheeh Sunnah of the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and shun that which is da’eef (weak) and mawdoo’
(fabricated).

5 SURAH Al HUD
SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

Abu bakr (r.a) said " Oh Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), your hair has turned grey. So He (s.a.w) said "

From 'Irbaadh ibn Saariyah (r.a) said : Rasool (s.a.w) never used to sleep until he recited : The

of ‘al-Kahf,’ then he will be protected from the trial of the Dajjal.”['as-Silsilah as-Sahihah'; # 582]

And In another narration the last 10 verses [Sahih Muslim]

“Whoever recites ‘al-Kahf’ (in the same manner) as it was revealed, he will have a light on the Day of
Resurrection that will reach from wherever he is all the way to Makkah. And whoever recites the last
ten verses of it, and the Dajjal emerges right after, then he will not be harmed by him. And nobody
makes ablution, then says: ‘Glory and praise be to You, O Allah. I bear witness that there is none
worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance’ [Subhanak
Allahumma wa bi Hamdik; ashhadu an la ilaha illa Ant. Astaghfiruk wa atubu ilayk] except that it is
written on a tablet and permanently transcribed on that tablet, and that tablet will not be broken or
damaged until the Day of Resurrection.” ['as-Silsilah as-Sahihah'; # 2651]

Prophet (s.a.w) said " Whoever recited Surahtul Kahf on the night of Friday; he will be illuminated with
a light between him and the Ancient House (Makkah) [Saheeh al Targheeb wa tarheeb : 736]
"Whoever recited Surah Al Kahf, on the day of Friday, he will be illuminated with a light between the

And for whoever recites it , he has a reward like that and whoever recites it, he is forgiven for what is
between two fridays and another three days. They (Sahabas) said " Ofcourse (tell us). He (s.a.w) said
" Surah AL Kahf" [Da'eef Jiddan - Jami' Al Sagheer : 2160]

8 SURAH Al YASEEN
SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

by Hussain Saleem Asad Hadith 3462]

WEAK NARRATIONS : [Almost All the narrations speaking about yaseen are weak, however in
regards to fadhail, only after certain conditions are implied, its content can be acceptable on some
hadeeth only]

It was narrated that Anas said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
‘Everything has a heart and the heart of the Qur’aan is Ya-Seen. Whoever recites Ya-Seen, Allaah will
record for him the reward of reading the Qur’aan ten times.’” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2887. He said,

him) said: “Recite Ya-Seen over your dead.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3121; Ibn Maajah, 1448.
Shaykh al-Albaani said: With regard to reciting Soorat Ya-Seen over the deceased and turning him to
face the qiblah, there is no saheeh hadeeth to this effect. Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz, p. 11)

Whoever reads yaseen seeking Allah's pleasure, his past sins will be forgiven. So recite it over the
dying among you [Da'eef Jami' al Sagheer : 5785]

life and all that it contains: (Verily, We have given you a manifest victory. That Allah may forgive you
your sins of the past and the future.) [ Al-Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i collected this Hadith from
several chains of narration through Malik, may Allah grant him His mercy. `Ali bin Al-Madini
commented, "This is a good chain of narration consisting of the scholars of Al-Madinah.'' Imam Ahmad
recorded that Anas bin Malik said, "This Ayah was revealed to the Prophet, See Sahih Al Jami' 5121]

This surah was revealed when the companions and prophet (s.a.w) were returning from Al Hudaibiyah
, disappointed because they couldn't enter the Makkah for their pilgrimage and to meet their family
members, and had to return back to Madinah.

12 SURAH Al TAKATHUR
WEAK NARRATIONS :

The Prophet (Sallallähu alaihi wa sallam) asked: “Can any one of you recite a thousand verses daily?”
Sahabah replied: “Who has the ability to do so?”
He said: “Can any one of you not recite: Surah Alhakumut Takathur (102), (its reward is equivalent to
the reciting of a thousand verses)”. (Mustadrak Hakim)

[Da'eef - Uqbah bin Muhammad bin Uqbah is Majhool. Shaikh Albanee classified so in Takhreej
Mishkat al Massabeh (2125) , Mundhari in Targheeb wa Tarheeb (2/321) and Albaani further classified
this Da'eef in Taargheeb (891) and so on]

said, ‘Then leave it to your family and dependents.” He said, “I have taught them something which, if
they say it, they will never become poor. I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) say, ‘Whoever recites al-Waaqi’ah every night will never become poor.” [Narrated
by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan, 2/491. This hadeeth was classed as da’eef by Shaykh al-Albaani
in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah, 289, also see Da'eef al Jami' Al Sagheer 5773).

Teach your women Surah Al Waqiah; Indeed it is a surah of bringing sufficiency (wealth) [Da'eef al
Jami' al Sagheer : 3730]

Whoever recites Surah Al Waqiah and teaches it , he is not considered to be among the heedless one.
And he and his family will never become poor [Al Da'eefa : 291]

SURAH Al HASHR

'Whoever when he wakes in the morning says (three times) 'I seek refuge with Allah against the
accursed satan' and then recited three verses from the last part of Surah al Hashr, will be assigned
seventy thousand angels to pray for him until the evening, and should he die that day, he would have
died a martyr' [Reported Ibn Ahmad, Darimi, Tirmidhi 5/182- All narrations are weak. Also see Da'eef
Jami' al Sagheer: 5732]

Whoever recited the end of Surah al Hashr in the day or night - and then dies on that day or night,
paradise becomes obligatory on him [Da'eef al Jami' al Sagheer : 5770]

Allah's greatest Names are in the last six verses of Surah Al Hashr [Da'eef Jami' al Sagheer :853]

On the authority of Ibn `Abbaas ‫ رضي هللا عنهما‬that the Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬said: “The Great names of
Allaah are in the last six aayaat of Surah al-Hashr.” [Dha`eef Jami` al-Sagheer (853), and graded as
“Dha`eef” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Dha`eefah (2773)]

On the authority of Anas bin Maalik ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬that the Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬advised a man that when
he goes to bed, to recite Surah al-Hashr. And he ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬said: “If you die, you will a martyr.” Or
he said: “you will be from the people of paradise.” [Ibn Sunni (712) and graded as “Dha`eef” by Shaikh
al-Albaanee in al-Dha`eefah (2217). Ibn Hajar said: “Its chain is very weak”.]
On the authority of Anas bin Maalik ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬that the Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬said: “Whoever reads
the last part of Surah al-Hashr then all his past and future sins will be forgiven.” [Ibn Hajar said in al-
Khisaal al-Mukaffirah (1/66): “In its chain is Yazeed bin Aabaan and he is weak. Also in its chain is
Muhammad bin Yunus, scholars have spoken a lot about him.”]

The Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬said: “O `Alee! If you feel a headache, put your hand on it (the head) and
recite the last part of Surah al-Hashr.” [reported by al-Shawkaanee in al-Fawaaid al-Majmoo`ah (313)
with two chains and in both the condition of the narrators are unknown]

Abu Umaamah ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬reported that the Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬said: “Whoever recites (in the night)
the end part of Surah al-Hashr and then dies, (Jannah) will be affirmed for him. And whoever recites
it in the morning and then dies, (Jannah) will be affirmed for him.” [reported by Ibn `Adee in al-Kaamil
fee al-Du`afaa’ (4/335) and he said it is a rejected narration. Ibn al-Faisaraanee said in Dhakheeratul
Huffaadh (4/2368), in its chain is Saleem bin `Uthmaan who would narrate spurious narrations and
this is one of them]

SURAH Al MULK & SURAH SAJDAH & Insaan

SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

Narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “A
soorah from the Qur’aan containing thirty verses will intercede for a man so that he will be forgiven. It
is the soorah Tabaarak Alathi bi yadihi’l-mulk [i.e., Soorat al-Mulk].”[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2891; Abu
Dawood, 1400; Ibn Maajah, 3786, Ahmad (7634) Al-Tirmidhi said, this is a hasan hadeeth. It was
classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 22/277, and by Shaykh
al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 3053 and classes as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 3/6]

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood said: Whoever reads Tabaarak allaahi bi yadihi’l-mulk
[i.e., Soorat al-Mulk] every night, Allaah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of
the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) we used to call it al-maani’ah
(that which protects). In the Book of Allaah it is a soorah which, whoever recites it every night has
done very well.[Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 6/179; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb
wa’l-Tarheeb, 1475.]

Narrated from Jaabir, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never used to
sleep until he had recited Alif-laam-meem tanzeel [al-Sajdah] and Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk [al-
Mulk].

[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2892; Ahmad, 14249. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi (3/6) that this
hadeeth is saheeh.]

In the Book of the Friday prayer, al-Bukhaaree (Rahimahullaah) recorded that Abu-Hurayrah
(RadiAllaahu-'anhu) said, "The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wa Sallam) used to recite in Fajr on
Fridays:
﴾َ‫﴿الم ت َِّنزيل‬

(Alif Lam Mim. The revelation of...), As-Sajdah [32], and

﴾‫ـن‬
ِّ ‫س‬
َ ‫الن‬ َ ‫﴿ه َْل أَت َى‬
ِّ ‫علَى‬

(Has there not been over man...) Al-Insan [76].'' This was also recorded by Muslim.

SURAH Al SHARH AND SURAATUL FEEL

WEAK NARRATIONS :

Whoever recites in the Fajr - Surah Al Sharh and Surah al Feel he will never become blind [ laa aslah
la - no basis - Al Da'eefa (67)]

SURAH Al QADR
WEAK NARRATIONS :

It is reported that he (s.a.w) recited Surah Al Qadr after making wudhu (ablution) [Al Da'eefa 68]

Whoever recites Al Qadr after completing his wudu - one time - that he is written to be among the
sincere ones, and if he recited it twice, he is included in the gardens of the martyrs and if he recite it
thrice, he will be resurrected among the resurrection of the prophets [Al Da'eefa 1449]

SURAH Al JUMU'AH
WEAK NARRATIONS :

The one who recites Soorat al-Jumu’ah will be given hasanaat in reward equal to the number of those
who come to Jumu’ah and those who do not in the Muslim regions [Narrated by al-Tha’labi in al-Kashf
wa’l-Bayaan (9/305)]

The above narration is Mawdo' (Fabricated) because the sanad contains Abu ‘Asmah ibn Abi Maryam,
who is a well known fabricator and liar

Al-Manaawi said in al-Fath al-Samaawi: it is mawdoo

It says in al-Saheeh wa’l-Saqeem min Fadaa’il al-Qur’aan al-Kareem by Amaal Sa’di (p. 81): There is
no saheeh report from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about
the virtues of Soorat al-Jumu’ah. There are da’eef (weak) and mawdoo’ (fabricated) reports about its
virtues

But Soorat al-Jumu’ah is one of the mufassal soorahs (those in the latter part of the Qur’aan) which
the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said he was favoured with above all other
Books and Prophets. It was narrated from Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ that the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I have been favoured with al-Mufassal.”

Narrated by Ahmad (4/107); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Bidaayat al-Sool, p. 59. He said: The
reviewers of al-Musnad under the supervision of Shaykh Shu’ayb al-Arna’oot said that its isnaad is
hasan.

SURAH Al ZALZALAH
WEAK NARRATIONS :

Surah Zalzalah is equal to half the Quran [Da'eef Targheeb wa tarheeb : 889]

Route 1: It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of
Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘When the earth is shaken with its (final)
earthquake’ (i.e., Soorat al-Zalzalah) is equivalent to half of the Qur’aan.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi
(2894) and al-Haakim (1/754)]

Its isnaad includes Yamaan ibn al-Mugheerah al-‘Anzi, concerning whom al-Bukhaari and Abu Haatim
said: his hadeeth is munkar. Ibn Hibbaan said: his hadeeth is very munkar; he narrates munkar
hadeeth that have no basis and deserve to be ignored. See Tahdheeb al-Tahdheeb (4/452).

Yamaan is the only one who narrated this hadeeth, alone among the companions of ‘Ata’, and he is
not acceptable as a sole narrator of a hadeeth, rather the fact that he is the sole narrator indicates that
it is munkar. And Allaah knows best.

The majority of scholars are the view that the hadeeth is to be regarded as weak because of Yamaan
ibn al-Mugheerah, in contrast to those scholars who classed it as saheeh. It was classed as da’eef by
al-Tirmidhi when he said, after quoting it: it is ghareeb and we know it only from the hadeeth of Yamaan
ibn al-Mugheerah.

It was also classed as such by Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in al-Tamheed, where he said: It is one of the
ahaadeeth of the Shaykhs, not one of the ahaadeeth of the imams. And it was classed as da’eef by
Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari (8/687), by al-Dhahabi in Talkhees al-Mustadrak, by al-Manaawi in Fayd al-
Qadeer (1/367) and by al-Shawkaani in al-Fath al-Rabbaani (12/5930). Al-Albaani said in al-Silsilah
al-Da’eefah (1342): it is munkar
Route 2: It was narrated from Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites ‘When the earth is shaken with
its (final) earthquake’, it will be equivalent to half of the Qur’aan for him.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi
(2893)]

Its isnaad includes al-Hasan ibn Saalim al-‘Ajali. Al-Mazzi said: He is a Shaykh who is unknown and
recited only one hadeeth. Al-‘Aqeeli said: He is unknown with regard to transmitting hadeeth. Ibn
Hibbaan said: he narrates from trustworthy narrators things that do not sound right. [See Tahdheeb
al-Tahdheeb (1/396]

The scholars are unanimously agreed that this hadeeth is also to be regarded as da’eef. It was classed
as da’eef by al-Tirmidhi when he said, after quoting it: It is ghareeb. Al-‘Aqeeli said: It is not known, as
stated in Tahdheeb al-Tahdheeb (1/396). It was also classed as da’eef by Ibn Hibbaan in al-
Majrooheen (1/279), and al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan (2/497). Al-Dhahabi said in Mizaan al-
I’tidaal (1/523): it is munkar. Al-Albaani said likewise in al-Da’eefah (1342).

Route 3: It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites ‘When the earth is shaken with its (final)
earthquake’ in one night, it will be equivalent to half of the Qur’aan for him.” [Narrated by Ibn al-Sunni
in ‘Aml al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah (691)]

Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah (1342): It was
narrated by Abu Umayah al-Tarsoosi in Musnad Abi Hurayrah (2/195), but its isnaad is very weak
(da’eef jiddan); it includes ‘Eesa ibn Maymoon al-Madani, who was classed as da’eef by a number of
scholars. Abu Haatim and others said: His hadeeth is to be rejected.

Ibn Hajar said in Nataa’ij al-Afkaar (3/268): Its isnaad includes a narrator who is very weak

Conclusion: From the above it is clear that there is no saheeh report from the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) about Soorat al-Zalzalah being equivalent to half of the Qur’aan. But
it seems that some of the imams of the salaf followed this hadeeth and, based on their own ijtihad,
stated that the important meanings that are contained in this soorah are equivalent to half of the
principles that the Qur’aan referred to and those salaaf and narrations are:

1. It says in Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzaaq (3/372): It was narrated that Ma’mar said: I heard a man
narrating that ‘When the earth is shaken with its (final) earthquake’ is equivalent to half of the Quran.

2. It was narrated from Ja’far that Hishaam ibn Muslim said: I heard Bakr ibn ‘Abd-Allaah al-Muzani
say: ‘When the earth is shaken with its (final) earthquake’ is half of the Quran.

3. Abu ‘Ubayd narrated a mursal report from al-Hasan al-Basri: “ ‘When the earth is shaken with its
(final) earthquake’ is equivalent to half of the Qur’aan, and ‘By the (steeds) that run’ (Soorat al-
‘Aadiyaat) is equivalent to half of the Quran.” [See: al-Itqaan by al-Suyooti (2/413)]
4. It was narrated that ‘Aasim ibn Abi’l-Nujood al-Imam al-Muqri’ said:

5. It was said that whoever recites ‘When the earth is shaken with its (final) earthquake’ it is as if he
has recited half of the Qur’aan.

6. Ibn Hajar said in Nataa’ij al-Afkaar (3/270): its men are thiqaat.

7. Al-Manaawi said in Fayd al-Qadeer (1/367): Because the greatest objective of the Quran is to
explain the creation and the resurrection, and ‘When the earth is shaken with its (final) earthquake’
refers only to the resurrection, therefore it is equivalent to half of the Quran. This was referred to by
al-Qaadi.

Hence, this is the ijtihaad of some of the salaf, and it is not permissible to attribute it to the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It does not mean that it is equivalent to half of the Quran
in terms of reward. And Allaah knows best.

SURAH Al FALAQ AND SURAH AL NAAS

It is reported that these surah's were revealed when the Prophet (s.a.w) had black magic casted upon
him by a Jew in Madinah. Thus these two surahs (Muwaddhatayn) are one of the most powerful tools
to combat ad prevent evil eye, black magic and similar harm.
SAHEEH NARRATIONS :

Prophet (s.a.w) said " should i inform you of the best refuge which the person who seeks refuge takes?
They (Sahabas) said "Of course Messenger of Allah" He (s.a.w) said " Al Falaq & Al Naas - these two
Surahs [ Al Saheeha :1104]
