Column failure involves the phenomenon of buckling, during which a member experiences
deflections of a totally different character than those associated with the initial loading. Thus,
when an axially loaded column is first loaded, it simply shortness or compresses in the
direction of the load. If and when a buckling load is reached, the shortening deformation
stops, and a sudden lateral and/or twisting deformation occurs in a direction normal to the
column axis, thus limiting the axial load capacity.
Base on the reason above, we recommend not to replace or remove the beam across in the
building, moving the beam up/down will weaken the columns capacity.
