Brno is the second biggest city of
Czech Republic. It lays in the heart
of the South Moravian region at the
confluence of Svratka and Svitava
river. It is a judiciary centre of the
republic and an important admin-
istrative center.
Big part of the population of the
city are students, many of them
from other cities and neighbour-
ing Slovakia which means a sig-
nificant difference in number of
people in the city during the year
and the summer - there is approx-
imately 83 000 students from 34
faculties of 14 universities and
other higher education institutions.
Brno is also known for its exhibi-
tion center which host a number of
international exhibitions, motorcy-
cle Grand Prix and Ignis Brunensis
firework festival which all bring
thousands of visitors to the city.
The city unfolds between hills with
Špilberk castle and St. Peter and St.
Pauls cathedral. Its developement
started in 11th century. The center
is surrounded by ring avenue in-
spire by ringstrasse in Vienna. The
center is mostly pedestrian with
a positive developement of public
spaces in the last years. There is a
mix of various architectrual styles
including late 19th cetury deco-
rative buildings, secession and
funcionalism. It is also home to a
UNESCO heritage villa Tugendhat
designed by Mies van der Rohe.
The outskirts of the city are often
comprised of concrete high rise
apartment blocks. In the pas Brno
was a textile industry center, nick-
named Moravian Manchester, now
the city is left with brownfields.
TRAFFIC
Brno is an important transport
hub between Prague, Bratislava
and Vienna. The city is accesible
by number of trains and buses.
Brno is connected to other cities
by highway D1 to Prague and D2
in the direction of Bratislava. There
is also a small international air-
port. Brno has a complex system
of public transport which includes
trams, buses, trolleybuses, trains
and boats on the Brno lake to the

Public space
Quality of public spaces in rno im-
proved in the last years. The city
center is mostly pedestrian with
only tram ans supply and resident
cars passing through. Majority of
streets is wide with stone pav-
ing. There is a variety of squares
in the center. The main square is
the Square of Liberty. Its triangular
shape comes from its origin - in
the 13th century it was a crossing
of three trade routes. Nowadays
the square is a crossing of import-
ant city streets which create axis
to other parts of the center - main
train station, national theatre, street
with main local meeting spot, Do-
minican square . Around the center
there is a ring road leading along-
side formal city fortification mod-
elled after ringstrasse in Vienna - it
consist of a wide road with green-
ery and important public and cul-
tural institutions alongside - there
are galleries, theatres, churches,
train station etc. The ring road de-
fines the formal borders of the city,
it also defines the pedestrian area
and creates a cultural zone. Signifi-
cant role in the public space in Brno
has art and statues with differnt
historical meanings which help to
define the space.
There is 482 green spaces of dif-
ferent sizes around the city. There
