From New York To Los Angeles - In A Yellow Cab!

Gap-fill exercise

Principio del formulario

Two New Yorkers have accomplished a challenge that most people would have

considered impossible - convince a Yellow Cab driver to take

them cross-country from the Big Apple to Los Angeles.

This trip started as a crazy idea that New Jersey resident John Belitsky,

teamed up with at his pal, Dan Wuebben's birthday party. After convincing Dan

to go along with him on the approximately 3,000-mile bi-coastal trip, they started

looking for a yellow cab driver, crazy enough to agree to them.

While this may sound easy, in a city where drivers refuse to go from Brookyln to

Queens , this was an enormous task. In fact John's father, a retired cab driver

was convinced that he would agree - John of course took that as a challenge!

After being turned on by a number of cab drivers the two met Mohammed Alam,

an immigrant from Bangladesh at La Guardia Airport, who was intrigued by the

idea. In fact, he agreed to do it for just $5,000, a big discount on the $17,000 it

would have cost had the meter while running.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am the secretary of my college History Club. I have read your

advertisement for the exhibition “The Roman Empire” and I am interested

in organising a group visit. I was wondering if I could ask you some

questions about our visit.

I would be grateful if you could let me know whether we need to book.

Also, how long in advance do we need to say that we will be

coming? Our group is quite large, so I would also like to know if there

is a maximum group size.

Since we will probably coming for the entire day, I would like to know if

there is some place to buy snacks, or if there is a picnic area where we

can eat our own food.

I look forward to hearing from you and visiting your museum.

Yours faithfully

Justin Beiber

COMPLETE THIS INFORMAL LETTER

Dear Jordan,

Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear about you. Sorry I

haven't written sooner but I've been really busy with exams.

In your letter you asked me about which language school would be

better for you. I’ll give you some tips about it with pleasure.

Firstly, about your lesson schedule, I suggest you don’t study the very intensive

2 week (60 hour) course because it's too stressful and those courses

don't have a high success rate. It's much more sensible to do the 4

week (60 hour) course. Furthermore , on the 4 week course there will

be much more time to get involved in some serious speaking practice.

Secondly, accommodation, living with a local family is better

than staying in a hostel because you’ll have a great chance to improve your

everyday spoken English. Thirdly about excursions. If I were you,

instead of paying high prices for them, I’d buy a map of the city and go round all

the places of interest on foot or by bike, which you can rent there.

Finally, my last piece of advice is, as you like clubbing and partying so much

you should choose the school which is in London where there's lots of nightlife. I

think the out of town school would be a bit boring for you.

Drop me a line soon and let me know what you decide to do.

Best wishes,

Andrew

FUTURE PERFECT AND SIMPLE FUTURE

Tom will finish his work at midnight.

and

Tom will have finished his work at midnight.

"Tom will finish his work at midnight" means that he will be working

until midnight, and midnight is more or less the exact time he will

finish working.

"Tom will have finished his work by midnight" means that Tom will

work until a time before midnight, when the work will be finished. We

don't know when. Maybe 8, 9 or 10 o'clock.

Note that with the future perfect, we usually use the preposition by,

or before.

"Future simple" tells about something that is predicted to happen or

will happen in the future. For example, firve years from now, in
August 2113, little Sally will begin kindergarten. Little Sally is only
two weeks old right now.

But before that time, little Sally will have learned to walk, to talk and
to do many other things that she can't do now. She will learn how to
do these things during the next few years, but she will have finished
learning them at some time before she begins kindergarten. There
will be a space of time between the end of learning those things and
the beginning of kindergarten.

This is different from the future simple, in which you just describe
things in the future.

 In August 2113, little Sally will begin kindergarten.

 By August 2113, little Sally will have learned how to walk, how to talk, how

to eat by herself, how to throw things, probably how to swim, and many more things.
