Review on Water Resource Engineering

Sheryl Malittay
What is Water Resource Engineering ?

• Involves planning and management of various

constructed facilities that provide solutions for the
objectives listed:

– Design various hydraulic structures

– Manage of waterways-flood & Erosion Protection
– HydroElectric power development
– Irrigation, water supply, and Navigation
Facts on history

• 1st known large-scale irrigation project - EGYPT

5000 yrs ago

• Conveyance of water through pipes:

– Bamboo pipes, CHINA (Early 2500 B.C.)
– Lead & Bronze pipes, ROMANS (200 B.C.)
HYDROLOGICAL CYCLE
• Evaporation
– water changes from liquid to gas

• Evapotranspiration
– combination of water released to the atmosphere by
evaporation and transpiration
•Precipitation
– the water that falls to the earth

•Surface Runoff
– movement of water, usually from precipitation, across
the earth's surface towards stream channels, ocean,
and etc.
• Percolation
– the downward movement of water through soil & rocks
– seeps underground from the run-off stage

• Infiltration
– entry of water in to the soil surface
– constitute the sole source of water to sustain the growth
of vegetation and helps sustain the ground water supply
• Transport
– movement of the water through the atmosphere,
specifically from over the oceans to over the lands
Role of Civil Engineer (Modern Practice of stormwater Management)

1. Flood Control - manage the natural flow of stormwater

2. Water Resources - exploit the available water resources

for beneficial purposes

3. Water Quality - managing the use of water

Engineering Design

• Design Process
1 Concept - Determine the basic concept of the design. In this
case, it is to convey stormwater from one location to another.

2 Base Map - Prepare a base map showing the topographic

features of the project site, together w/ any pertinent property
boundary
Engineering Design

• Design Process
3 Design development - Sketch the alternative layouts of the
pipe on the base map.

4 Calculations - Perform appropriate engineering computations

of key design quantities, e.g. anticipated amount of stormwater to
be conveyed in the pipe and the resulting pipe size.
Engineering Design

• Design Process
5 Prepare drawings and specifications - showing the layout in
plan and profile including any details and notes needed.
