Drexel Society of Women Engineers

Aspire, Advance, Achieve

Societal Mission: “Our mission is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers
and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of
life, and demonstrate the value of diversity.”

Drexel Society of Women Engineers is an extremely unique section. Beyond a traditional

executive board, the section is composed of seven diverse committees including: Diversity and Inclusion,
Membership, Networking, Outreach, Professional Development, Public Relations, and Wellness. Each of
these committees hosts events and provides resources that support SWE members in alignment with the
SWE mission. With nearly one hundred new student members joining the organization within the past
year, Drexel SWE continues to grow as a constant influx of new members and greater student
participation and enthusiasm drives this section to create new events that cater to students’ needs,
allowing for both personal and professional growth. Future events will be developed based on goals of
current members. This will be a process of learning what SWE members are interested in achieving, from
large to small goals. In keeping with SWE’s mission of “Aspire, Advance, Achieve”, Drexel SWE plans
to use the idea of Wellness to connect members’ goals and aspirations to how they can grow as students,
professionals, and leaders through resources provided by the section. From the responses of members,
events will be catered toward specifically enhancing members’ skills, introducing new skills, and
providing information and resources to achieve said goals. SWE members are engaged in enhancing the
organization’s mission by planning events for the coming academic term that range from personal finance
workshops for Drexel students to coding lessons for local mothers and their middle school daughters to a
public health symposium to involve professors, alumni, and local professionals.
These exciting plans for the Drexel SWE section means that strengthening sponsorship from
outside Drexel University is a key priority. The section recognizes that in order to allow Drexel SWE to
grow along with the steady increase in new members, it must look beyond short-term financial goals and
seek new sources of funding. To this end, Drexel SWE would like to ask for your help. Your support will
promote the visions of both SWE and Drexel University in cultivating effective engineering female
leadership in the global community.

Host a Career Development Event!
Drexel SWE is excited to offer your
organization an opportunity to host an
information session or a plant tour. These
events are some of the most anticipated
amongst Drexel students, and often extend
beyond SWE members. In fact, a recent
corporate sponsored event drew more than
seventy student members and faculty into attendance, half of which were outside of the Drexel SWE
student section. Events such as these allow organizations to demonstrate their missions and work to
potential student co-ops or future employees.

Sponsor a SWE Outreach Program!

To promote STEM education, Drexel SWE participates in
local STEM promotional events, such as the Philadelphia
Science Festival, and we host our own events for local high
school and middle school students at Drexel. Our most notable
events are our Engineering Night for Girls at North Penn High
School, our Introduction to Engineering Workshop at
Independence Charter School (pictured left), and our
TechGirlz coding and engineering workshops!

Send a Member to SWE Annual or Local Conference!

Attending Annual conference allows many opportunities for Drexel students, including a career fair with
over 300 companies and organizations represented, corporate networking and interview opportunities, and
a poster competition. Annual conference also brings together SWE members from across the globe.
Additionally, members could attend hundreds of workshops ranging topics such as Career Enhancement,
Academia and Research, K-12 Outreach, Inclusion and Cultural Awareness, and Wellness. Many of these
opportunities are also experienced at local conferences, an annual conference that brings together sister
members from over sixty schools in the Mid-Atlantic region. At WE18 in Minneapolis, the Drexel SWE
Section won our first Gold Collegiate Mission Award (pictured below)!
