ES 39 Mechanics of Fluids QUIZ 2

Name:_______________________________

Instructions: Present your solution with figures and enclose your final answer in a box in every item.

1. A triangular gate of height 1.2 m and base of 0.9 m is installed in a position that its plane is inclined 60
degrees with the horizontal with its vertex at the top and the base is parallel to the water surface. The
vertex is at a depth of 2 m vertically below the water surface. Fresh water is on one side of the gate.
(15pts.)
a. Evaluate the total hydrostatic force on the gate in kN.
b. Locate the center of pressure from the water surface.
c. If the gate is hinged at the bottom, evaluate the force normal to the gate at its vertex that will be
required to open it in kN.
2. Determine the placement d of the pin on the 3-ft-diameter circular gate so that it begins to rotate clockwise
(open) when water reaches a height h = 10 ft. what is the resultant force acting on the gate? (10pts.)

3. One curved surface is shown restraining a body of static fluid. (20pts.)

a. Compute the magnitude of horizontal and vertical component of the force exerted by the fluid on the
curved surface;
b. Compute the magnitude of the resultant force and its point of application;
c. Determine the location of horizontal and vertical force component.

4. A 3-ft diameter log (sg = 0.82) divides two shallow ponds as shown in the figure. Compute the net vertical
and horizontal reactions at point C, if the log is 12 ft long. (15pts.)
