It is part of the overall management of a business. An understanding of general management is essential for a proper understanding of maintenance management, The key issues in maintenance management include the following. + In-house versus outsourcing of maintenance: + Approaches to maintenance; + Maintenance planning; + Maintenance economics; + Maintenance logistics; + Maintenance management system (MMS). “This chapter gives an overview of maintenance management and deals with some of the issues listed above. The remaining issues are discussed in later chapters of Pact D. ‘The structure of the chapter is as follows. We start with a brief discussion of management in general and the key issues involved in Section 17.2. Section 17.3 deals with the Key issues of maintenance management and provides a brief introduction to the various chapters in Part D. Maintenance organization is discussed in Section 17.4. Section 17.5 deals with altemative approaches used in maintenance and looks at the following three methods: (@ reliability-centred maintenance (RCM), (ii) total productive maintenance (TPM), and (ii) risk-based maintenance (RBM), Section 17.6 focuses on risk and maintenance, and Section 17.7 discusses maintenance management systems. We conclude with a summary of the chapter in Section 17.8. 17.2 Management Definition 17.1 ‘Management of a business (organization) involves the coordination of the efforts of people to accomplish the business goals and objectives using the available resources in an efficient and elfective manner, Management requires decision making by managers at different levels of the business, involving many different functions, o achieve the desired goals in different time frames. 17.2.1 Management Functions ‘As shown in Figure 17.1, the main functions of management are planning, organizing, imple- ‘menting, and controlling. We will discuss each of these briefly. The other elements of the figure are discussed later. 172.11 Planning Planning involves establishing organizational goals and determining the means of achieving these. The three aims for planning are: 1. To establish an overall direction and goals for the future of the organization in terms of growth, profitability, social responsibility, and so on. 2. To identify the organization's resources and commit them to achieve established goals, 3, To decide what needs to be done to achieve the established goals.
