3.2 Mode of functioning

Silo
The silo and the mixing chamber must be vented by means of
filter systems. In the compartment underneath the silo cone (1.3)
there is the silo cone aeration system (1.23.1) and silo cone
venting system (1.23.2) for avoiding heat accumulation.
The silo (1) is used as an intermediate storage for dry fluidisible
bulk materials. It is continuously fed via the material distributor
(1.1).
The maximum filling height is restricted by the filling level limit
switch (1.8).
The respective filling level in the silo is determined by means of a
filling level measurement. The feeding system must be switched
off if a silo pilot is used for the measurement.
Air is introduced into the stored bulk material via the aeration
boxes (1.13), which loosens the bulk material and makes them
free-flowing. Due to the inclined floor areas the fluidised bulk
material flows through the silo outlet openings (1.11) into the
downstream outlet devices (2).
The aeration boxes (1.13) and the silo outlet troughs (1.12) in the
silo are supplied with air via ducting from the blowers (1.14 and
1.14.1). The air flow rate can be set by means of the manual
valves (1.18 to 1.21).
The aeration of each aeration sector is activated or deactivated
via the shutoff devices (1.16, 1.17 and 1.22).
The bulk material is discharged continuously. The bulk material is
conveyed respectively from one aeration sector of the silo, via
the outlet device (2), into the mixing chamber.

Mixing chamber
The blower (3.13) for the mixing chamber (3) is continuously in
operation for as long as the discharge system for the kiln feed
control system is in operation.
The filling level limit switch (3.3) is used to monitor the maximum
filling level in the mixing chamber.
The filling level in the mixing chamber is monitored with load
cells (3.4).
The bulk material is aerated via the aeration surface (3.7) and the
aeration floor (3.8), made free-flowing and mixed.
Components and mode of functioning Machine manual
24 Silo Type BL

The air flow rate can be set by means of the manual valves (3.10)
and the shutoff flap (3.11). The aeration of each aeration sector in
the mixing chamber is activated or deactivated via the shutoff
devices (3.9).
Via the outlet devices (4), the bulk material is continuously
withdrawn in a definable quantity.

4 Transport and assembly

4.1 Transport and storage instructions

The machine is transported in individual parts or in

subassemblies. Make absolutely sure that suitable hoisting gear
is employed in removing the parts from the transport vehicles and
transferring them to the storage area.
When they arrive at the site, all parts must be inspected for
transport damage and placed on wooden beams with the
provision of suitable protection against moisture, soiling and
damage. Never place the parts directly on the ground.
Make absolutely sure that motors, couplings, gear units and
measurement and control equipment are stored in well-ventilated
rooms and protected against moisture.

4.2 Assembly

General information
The following assembly instructions do not detail the individual
steps for assembling the units, but rather give an overview of the
work to be performed.
Changes in the planning of the plant during the processing of the
contract may lead to deviations from these assembly
instructions.

NOTE
It is a prerequisite of our warranty that final assembly and
assembly inspection are undertaken by an assembly specialist
from POLYSIUS AG.

We recommend that the assembly work is supervised from start

to finish by an assembly specialist from POLYSIUS AG.
Careful selection of the tools and appliances as well as the
assembly personnel to be employed is important for the correct
performance of the work.

CAUTION
If you carry out electrical welding on any part of the machine,
never conduct the welding current through plain or antifriction
bearings, other moving connecting elements or measuring
Transport and assembly Machine manual
2 Silo Type BL

devices, in order to prevent damage to these parts.

Always directly connect the welding current return lead to the
part being welded.
If welding work needs to be carried out in the silo or the mixing
chamber, then cover the aeration surfaces to protect the same
against weld spatter.
Machine manual Transport and assembly
Silo Type BL 3

Sequence of assembly
The aeration system for the silo (1) has to be mounted in
accordance with the drawing and in the following sequence.
Ensure that the aeration boxes (1.13) and the silo outlet troughs
(1.12) are clean and dry. Before fitting, the pipes must be blown
through.
 Provisionally install aeration boxes and silo outlet troughs
along the silo floor in accordance with the drawing. When doing
so, make absolutely sure, that the boxes are in contact across
the entire surface area, otherwise the silo floor must be
balanced.
 Install pipes on the surfaces and through the silo cone (1.3) in
accordance with the drawing.
 Connect aeration boxes to the pipes in accordance with the
following figure.

Figure 15

 Then mount the aeration boxes and weld the connecting pipes
fixed and airtight.
 When all aeration boxes and silo outlet troughs have been
installed and connected to the internal pipes, the connection
pipes are installed outside the silo interior.

NOTE
If the silo roof (1.2) has not yet been closed on completion of the
aeration system assembly, the aeration boxes must be protected
against moisture by means of suitable measures.
Transport and assembly Machine manual
4 Silo Type BL

 Mount mixing chamber (3).

Larger mixing chambers are delivered split for reasons of
transportation. These parts must be assembled on site and
welded gastight.
 Mount blocks with the same overall height as the load cells
(3.4) on the supports for the mixing chamber.
 Mount floor segments of the mixing chamber on the
supports.
 Mount cylinders and ceiling construction of the mixing
chamber (3) onto the floor of the mixing chamber.
 Mount fabric belts with underlaid sealing tapes onto the
aeration surfaces (3.7).
 Place sealing tape onto the outer flange (3.8.10) and mount
the preassembled aeration floor (3.8) on the mixing
chamber floor.

 Fit the pre-assembled pipes and fittings.

 If during assembly of the dedusting pipes, filter or outlet device
(2), it becomes necessary to carry out welding or flame-cutting
work, the fabric belts in the mixing chamber must be covered
such that they are safely protected against damage.
 Fit maintenance slide gate (2.1) and rotary flow regulating
valve (2.2) to the outlets of the silo. See separate machine
manuals.
 Mount trough sections (2.3) between the rotary flow regulating
valves and the mixing chamber (3).
 When fitting the expansion joint (2.8) on the trough outlet
(2.3.8), the unextended height of the bellows must be
maintained.
 The trough section FLUIDOR® must be supported.
 Mount load cells (3.4) under the mixing chamber in accordance
with the manufacturer’s instructions.
 When assembling the filling level limit switches (1.8 and 3.3),
ensure that a good electrically conductive earth connection of
the filling level limit switches with the silo (1) or mixing
chamber (3) is obtained.
Machine manual Transport and assembly
Silo Type BL 5

On completion of the aeration system assembly, the bolted

connections must be checked for tightness. For this purpose, the

7.4 Repair

Before performing any repair work, switch off the power supply to
all electrical components.
Ensure absolute cleanliness at all times during repair work in
order to prevent dirt from entering the bearings, the drive units or
other sensitive parts of the machine or plant.
Do not remove or open any covers or protection devices before all
rotating parts have stopped.
If welding work needs to be carried out in the silo or the mixing
chamber, cover the aeration surfaces to protect the same against
weld spatter.
The interior of the silo and of the mixing chamber may only be
entered if the silo or the mixing chamber is empty.
You can find information regarding the emptying of silo and
mixing chamber in the operating manual.
Assign entering the silo with a cable winch and cage only to
suitable and reliable persons who are familiar with this work.
Make sure that all applicable national safety instructions are
complied with.

For repair work on the blowers, fittings, etc., the manufacturer’s

instructions must be complied with.
