Different views to interpret history:

Colonial View:

Britishers highlighted the blackspots like Sati, Casteism etc and showed that they can save us.

Example:

Asiatic Society of Bengal set up by Sir William Jones in 1784

Translations:

3 volumes — Hindu , Muslim and British India — Indian history by James Mill

Nationalist View:

Modern Indian educated class became critical of the work done by Britishers when they realised their
true intentions through the books they had written.

They started to highlights Indian culture.

Example:

Neerdarpan by Dadabhai Nauroji

Marxist / Rationalist:

History should be seen from common man’s point of view rather than the kings and queens.

Hence re-written post independence.

Culture:

Belief and practices of a community which give it its individual identity.

Classical - based on ancient traditions

Folk - based on regional traditions

Pop - mixed culture
