SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Orientation and success building course for Career Students. Review of basic math, language,
vocabulary, and writing skills. Introduction to core career classes, availability of community resources,
outlining, summarizing, managing credit, and other life skills. Outside preparation and study time, in
addition to regular classroom activities, is required to complete the class assignments. The type of
outside preparation may take the form of homework assignments, projects, reading, and required
studying

COURSE OBJECTIVES: After the completion of course, the student should be able to:

• Define and describe personality and attitude and their influence in the workplace
• Identify individual personality traits and values.
• Describe the importance of goal setting
• Set realistic goals to help you reach your full potential in life.
• Define goal-setting techniques. Create short-term and long-term goals.
• Describe the importance of personal financial management.
• Define workplace diversity and realize its impact on performance.
• State the basic employee rights and legal protection available for workplace diversity issues.
• Identify the characteristics of effective leadership. Identify leadership styles.
• Describe and discuss the importance of professional behavior in your career
• State the impact dress can have on other’s perception
• Identify and describe the importance of customers and customer service
• Define conflict and its impact on performance
• Name and describe he different types the various conflict management styles and the appropriate
time to utilize each one
• Describe the process and purpose of negotiation
• Define key elements of the communication process
• Define the impact effective communication has in the workplace
• Identify appropriate and inappropriate relationships with your boss, colleagues, executives, and
customers
• Define a team and its function
• Define and link the concepts of empowerment, responsibility and accountability
• Identify job- specific skills and transferable skills
• Identify the steps to building a resume
• Conduct a targeted job search and create a job search portfolio
• Utilize the self- discovery process to identify the right career
• Apply time management techniques in the workplace
• Identify the causes of stress and name methods of dealing with stress
• Complete a course final project by composing a profile of a business you admire and research an
organization or business of choice to study its culture, financial success and customer satisfaction

METHOD OF EVALUATION
The instructor will evaluate appropriate student learning outcomes by assigning a course grade utilizing
the course component weight and grading scale outlined in the grading system.

GRADING WEIGHT:
Quiz 35%
Attendance 5%
Lab 10%
Homework 10%
Final Exam 40%

Grading Scale:

90 – 100% =A = 4.0
80 – 89% =B = 3.0
70 – 79 =C = 2.0
69% and below =F

In order to successfully complete this course, students must achieve the minimum passing grade of 70%
or higher. The instructor will evaluate appropriate student learning outcomes by assigning a course grade
utilizing the course component weight and grading scale outlined in the grading system.

Outside Work Requirements: The type of outside preparation may take the form of homework
assignments, projects, reading, and required studying.

ATTENDANCE:
Students are subject to the College’s attendance policy and procedures. The minimum attendance
requirement for this course is 90%. Please refer to the school catalog for all College policies.
