 Darcy comes to love Elizabeth sincerely because she is one of the only women to stand up to

him and to teach him a lesson that leads to true development in his character. In Elizabeth
Bennet, he found a young woman other people regarded as attractive for her wit and looks.
 The first time he asked her to dance, she refused him. This was doubtless something new. His
attention was riveted on her as a person different from anyone he had known before.
 Elizabeth's response to his proposal challenges to change his character. When he finally
proposes once again, and Elizabeth accepts him, it notes what he says about how he was
brought up with an incorrect understanding of pride, and how Elizabeth was the character to
make him realize he had to change his behavior.
 This builds on his earlier favorable impressions of Elizabeth to form a solid, lasting regard and
love towards her.
