Tei Wizhernon — ak lim gardhin archi - Acknowledgements The completion of this edition of The Gnomish Grammar and Lexicon would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of our families, friends, and fellow Tolkienian scholars and enthusiasts, and we thank them ail. Christopher Tolkien produced and made available to us photocopies of the manuscripts so that we could work on the material in America He was instrumental in our receiving permission to examine those original materials that are now collected at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. He also gave us much advice on difficult readings throughout the course of transcribing the lexicon. We wantto thank him in particular for all his help and encouragement, and we thank the Tolkien family and estate for permitting the publication of the lexicon and grammar. We also want to thank Dr. Judith Priestman of the Department of ‘Western Manuscripts and those other members of the Bodleian Library staff who assisted us during our visit to Oxford, and subsequently communicated vital information to us. Bill Welden and Jo Alida Wilcox have hosted a Colloquium on the Languages of Middle-Earth in each of the last five years. We thank them for this invaluable opportunity for us to meet and discuss Elvish linguistics in person. We also want to thank the Mythopoeic Society and its members for holding their annual Mythopoeic Conference, where the study and discussion of Tolkien's languages has been promoted and encouraged for twenty-five years. Asspecial thanks goes to Adam Vietor Christensen forthe drawings and ornamentation on the covers and title-page, and his advice on the design, lay-out and printing of the journal.
