Sumatran Elephants and Sumatran Rhinos are Endangered

Animals in Indonesia

Many animals in Indonesia are endangered, including Sumatran

Elephants and Sumatran Rhinos. Sumatran elephants are
subsspesies of Asian elephants that only live in Sumatra Island.
Sumatran elephants have a height of around 1,7-2,6 meters. If
compared with African elephants, the size of Sumatran elephants is
smaller. The Sumatran rhinos, also known as the two-horned Asian
rhinos or rhinoceros, is a rare species of the Rhinocerotidae family
and is one of the fve remaining species of rhinoceros. The
Sumatran rhinos is the only species preserved from the genus
Dicerorhinus. At present the population conditions are decreasing
along with the high rate of forest loss in Sumatra. Sumatran
elephants and Sumatran rhinos are currently in a critically
endengered status on the red list of endengered species issued by
the IUCN. In Indonesia, Sumatra elephants and Sumatra rhinos are
also included in protacted animals.

The entry of Sumatran Elephants and Sumatran Rhinos in the list is

caused by activities of illegal logging, habitat fragmentation,
murder and hunting. Elephants hunting is usually only take the
ivory and rhinos hunting is usually only take the horn. Elephant
ivory and rhinoceros horn are most often smuggled and traded in
Asian countries because of their very high selling prices. The
development of the pulp and paper industry and the oil palm
industry as one of the triggers for the loss of elephants and rhinos
habitat in Sumatra, has led to human and animal conficts that are
increasingly day-to-day. Young palm trees are elephant's favorite
foods and the damage caused by elephants can lead to murder
(generally with poisoning). The cause of rhinoceros extinction was
because the death rate of one-horned rhinos is greater than the
birth rate.

To mitigate human and animal conficts, since July 2009, WWF-

Indonesia has collaborated with the Way Kambas National Park
(TNWK) for Sumatran elephants and Sumatran rhinoceros breeding
grounds. This program aims to protect Sumatran elephants and
Sumatran rhinos from hunting by irresponsible people. With this,
Sumatran elephants and Sumatran rhinos can maintain their
population.
