7 Biggest Resume Mistakes that Freshers

Make
Although we agree that there can never be a “perfect” resume, but the quality of resumes we
correct on an average range from bad to poor. There are certain patterns that are common in
these resumes.
Here are the most common (and biggest) mistakes that one can make while creating their
resume:

1. All over the place

The human eyes and brains like to see shapes and objects in an organized format, by
making a resume that is not neat and ugly to look at, you are ensuring your resume is
rejected.

2. Incorrect Ordering of Education and Experience

Some students start with high school and then their college, latest and most relevant at
the top should be the thumb rule
For eg: Engineering Degree should be on Top, followed by Class 12th and then Class 10 th

3. A Super-Long Resume
How can a student fresh out of college without any relevant experience have a resume of
4 pages? As a thumb rule stick to only 1 page and try to utilize the space in the best
possible manner.

4. Grammar
Use tools like Microsoft Word or Grammarly to assist you with your grammar. Poor
grammar (language and punctuations), makes a poor first impression.

5. Mention things that you are good at

A fresher having 12+ skills indicates exaggeration. Mention the skills that you are good at
and are confident that you can answer questions around that topic. If you mention a
skillset and the interviewer asks a question about that topic and you are unable to answer,
it gives a very poor impression and the trust is lost during this brief conversation.
6. .doc/docx Format
This advice needs to be followed by freshers and experienced people both, .doc format is
the worst thing you can do to your resume. Someone can edit it and send it across. Use
PDF format instead. Everyone has a PDF reader, it cannot be easily changed and you can
be sure that the formatting of your resume stays consistent.

7. Unnecessary Jargon
Have you heard of KISS? Keep it Simple Stupid. A lot of creative students go the extra mile
and create resumes which resemble infographics, though we personally love to go
through such resumes and these candidates get extra credit for their effort and creativity,
but the harsh truth is that a lot of companies, job portals etc. use software to parse your
resume and create a match in the background. Such resumes make sense when you know
there is a human going through it. If it is a machine, then the chances are that your resume
might not get parsed properly and you would end up losing than gaining from your
creativity.

These are some of the biggest mistakes that students and experienced people make while
applying for a technical job. If you would like us to personally go through your resume and help
