DIAGNOSING CLUTCH SHUDDER

Ensuring that your car is in always proper shape will guarantee a smooth and enjoyable ride.
Every part of the car is indispensable and are must be checked on a regular basis especially
before long trips. The clutch is one important component that needs to be maintained. Since it
yields friction on a constant basis, it easily wears out. The clutch is situated between the car’s
engine and transmission. It transmits the torque, transports power to the engine, decreases
drive vibration and protects the drivetrain. Since it suffers stress each time a gear is altered, it
will eventually lead to malfunctions as the car ages.

There are several problems which may arise from the clutch and one of them is clutch chatter or
shudder. It is evident when the clutch is pushed at take-off. The vehicle moves in fore-and-aft
direction. When the clutch is completely engaged, then the shaking stops. Shudder issues are
likely to be caused by:

 Oil or grease contamination of clutch plate from engine or gearbox seal leakage
 Flywheel improperly resurfaced prior to installation of new clutch
 Faulty break-in process
 Flywheel or clutch disc friction surface unparallel with crank flange surface
 Flywheel has serious hard spots or hot spots
 Flywheel has improper step or cup dimension
 Damaged pressure plate or disc
 Disc has insufficient marcel (cushion is not enough between friction facings)
 Worn or damaged clutch linkage
 Crooked clutch disc and/or cover assembly
 Damaged U-joints or CV joints
 U-joints are misaligned
 Too much backlash in differential
 Too much driveline angle
 Inappropriate gear ratio versus tire diameter
 Engine is not properly tuned
 Engine or transmission mounts are worn or damaged
 Bad leaf springs, bushings or mounts

Vibrations may also be caused by broken drive straps on cover assembly that arises from
incorrect driving habits. Driver-induced shudder is caused by abrupt clutch engagement or
releasing. The wear and tear of a car’s clutch relies on one’s personal driving style and his
driving environment.
