The revised standard ‘which is in metric unils after being approved by the Bituminous Pavements Committee was processed by the Specifi- Rittons & Standards Committee and then approved by the, Executive Gommittee before it was approved by the Council of the Indien Roads Congress in their meeting held at Darjeeling on the Sth and &ih April, 1970 for being issued as the finalised standard of the Indian Roads Congress. ‘The present revised standard besides containing a few minor amendnente approved by the Bituminous Pavements Committee ae Gomains. revised. tolerances for surface evenness as approved by the Couneilof the Indian Roads Congress in their 87th meeting Pease Madras on the 27th August 1976 and incorporated in the IRC Special Publication 16 “Surface Evenness of Highway Pave- ments”. SCOPE ‘This is a recommended practice for laying 2 em thick bitumen and tar_carpets. The type and grade of binder is left to the Giscretion of the Engineer-in-charge, so as to be in conformity with Climatic, traffic and terrain conditions and based on past successful practices. ‘A. 2.CM THICK BITUMEN CARPET AL Materials ‘Ald. Binder : The binder shall be one of the followi (i) a straight run bitumen of suitable penetration grade complying with IS: 73-1961; (i) a cutback bitumen of suitable viscosity complying with js 217-1961 or JS: 4541961 or other approved eutback A.1.2. Coarse aggregates : The aggregates shall consist of angular ‘Hogments ard te clean, hard, tough, durable and of Uniform quality throughout. ‘They shall_ be crushed rock, gravel, Tier shingle or slag and should be free of elongated or flaky pitces, IRC: 141977 soft and disintegrated material, vegetable or other deleterious matter. The aggregates shall also satisfy the following properties: ome J vite | Mend 1. Abrasion value, using Los Angeles machine sax, 35% 18: 2386 (Part IV) ‘Ageregate impact value max. 30% dor 2, Flakiness index ‘max, 30% 1S: 2386 (Part 1) 3. Stripping value max. 25% 1S: 6241 4, Water absorption (except in case of slags) max. 2% IS: 2586 (Part III) ‘5. Soundaess: Loss with sodium sulphate— 3 oyoles (in case of slag only) max, 12% 1S: 2386 (Part V) 6. Unit welaht or bulk density si 1120 kg 1S: 2386(Part 111) Ga case of slag only) pera Unerushed and rounded river gravel or shingle ean also be used but the quantity of binder would be different in their case Hom that given under para A.2. Where such rounded aggregates Gre used, ft may be necessary to add sufficient quantity of coarse find and an appropriate quantity of hot bitumen to make the Siiture ‘suitable, for which purpose such a mix will have to be Uesigned for binder content depending on individual cases. ‘Ad.3. Fine aggregates or sand: The fine aggregates or sand shall consist of clean, hard, durable, uncoated, coarse dry particles, and be free from injurious amounts of dust, soft or flaky Particles or organic matter or other deleterious substances. ‘A2. Quantities of Materials Required AQ. Aggregates A211.
