What LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg is used
for
LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg contains a
drug called levofloxacin. Levofloxacin is
an antibiotic which is used to treat:
- Acute maxillary sinusitis (bacterial
infection of the sinus)
- Acute exacerbation of chronic
bronchitis (a sudden worsening of
inflammation of the bronchial tubes)
- Community-acquired pneumonia
(inflammation of lung)
- Urinary tract infections including
pyelonephritis mild to moderate
(bacterial infection of the kidneys)
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure
infections (mild to moderate)
(bacterial infection of skin and soft
tissues)
How LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg works
LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg contain
Levofloxacin belongs to a group of
medicines called antibiotic. Levofloxacin
is ‘quinolone’ antibiotic. It works by
killing the bacteria that cause infections
in your body.
Before you use LEVOCIN Tablet 500
mg
- When you must not use it
LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg must not be
taken when there is known :
- You are allergic (hypersensitive) to
levofloxacin, any other quinolone
antibiotic or any other ingredients of
this medicine.
Do not take this medicine if any of the
above applies to you. If you are not sure,
talk to your doctor or pharmacist before
taking LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg.
Pregnancy and lactation
Do not take this medicine if :
- You are pregnant, might become
pregnant or think you may be
pregnant
- You are breast-feeding or
planning to breast-feed
- Before you start to use it
Tell your doctor if you are taking any
other medicines, including any that
you buy without a prescription from a
pharmacy, supermarket or health food
shop.
- Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you
are taking or have recently taken any
other medicines. This is because
Levofloxacin tablets can affect the
way some othe medicines work. Also

- Some drugs like antacids, sucralfate,
metal cations, multivitamins may
disturb with the digestive tract
absorption of Levofloxacin,
resulting in systemic levels
considerably lower than desired.
These agents should be taken at least
two hours before or two hours after
Levofloxacin administration.
- The simultaneous administration
with a steroidal anti-inflammatory
drug may increase CNS (the part of
nervous system that include brain
and spinal cord) stimulation and
convulsive seizures.
- Disturbances of blood glucose,
including hyperglycemia (high blood
glucose) and hypoglycemia (low
blood glucose), have been reported
in patients treated simultaneously
with an antidiabetic agent.
Therefore, careful monitoring of
blood glucose is recommended.
How to use LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg
Always take LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg
exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has
told you. Check with your doctor or
pharmacist if you are not sure
How much to use
- Your doctor will decide on how
LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg you
should take
- The dose will depend on the type of
infection you have and where the
infection is in your body.
- If you feel the effect of your
medicine is too weak or strong, do
not change the dose yourself, but ask
your doctor.
- When to use it
Take this LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg at
the same time each day. The tablets
may be taken during meals or at any
time between meals.
- How long to use it
The length of your treatment will
depend on how serious your infection
is. Continue taking LEVOCIN Tablet
500 mg for as long as your doctor
recommends.
- If you forget to use it
Take the missed dose as soon as you
remember. Skip the missed dose if it is
almost time for your next scheduled
dose. Do not take extra medicine to
make up the missed dose
- If you use too much (overdose)
Contact your doctor immediately or go
to the Emergency Department of your
nearest hospital, if you think you or
anyone else may have taken too much
of this medicine. Do this even if there
are no signs of discomfort or
poisoning. You may need urgent
medical attention.
While you are using it

doctor has told you.
LEVOCIN Tablet 500 mg should be
swallowed whole with a drink.You
may take the tablets with or without
food.
