Toolbox Wiki (fun tools to use for

our assignments)
Wikis are documents that can be edited by multiple participants. If you use a tool
not listed, pay it forward! Click the Edit button in the upper right to add it to our
wiki.
As you think about designing online/blended activities and assessments to get students
thinking creatively and outside of the box, you'll want to have a toolkit handy.
Fortunately, the items below get us off to a good start!
Animated GIFs - Turn your videos into animated GIFs and use those to add some
presence in random places throughout your content.

 Tools like Giphy (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. can be used to
turn videos into GIFs
 GIFMaker.me (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. can be used to add
sounds to a series of animated images.

Slideshare

 If you have a lot of visuals to explain with your intro, but don't want to look into
animations, try adding an audio voice over (Links to an external site.)Links to an
external site. to a Slideshare (Links to an external site.)Links to an external
site. presentation. Be sure to have a few pictures of yourself in the slides for
students to see you.
 You can even embed a You Tube (Links to an external site.)Links to an external
site. video in your Slideshare.

Animations - If you would like to make a cartoon instead of using video, there are a
number of choices.

 I love using Tellagami (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. on my

iPad to do course introductions online. You can do a free one for 30 seconds.
 Voki (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.Powtoons (Links to an external
site.)Links to an external site. (a classic!)
 There's also Wideo (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

iBooks

 Story Creator (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Mindmapping

 Coggle (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

 Bubbl.us (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Infographics

 Canva (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

 Piktochart (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Videos

 For a list of video resources to use, especially for flipped classroom, here's a great
overview from Free Technology for Teachers. (Links to an external site.)Links to an
external site. The whole site is fantastic - be sure to bookmark and visit often.
 Animoto (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., is also great. They
give you 30 seconds at no charge.
 For Mac users who need easy video editing capabilities there's iMovie (Links to an
external site.)Links to an external site.. I've used this with students to put in cool
effects too.
 added by Rich Weber - EdPuzzle (Links to an external site.)Links to an external
site. is a great way to monitor students as they learn from video and answer
questions along the way.
 And of course there's FlipGrid (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
 Screencasting is recording what happens on your screen in a video. It is great for
"how to" or recording and sharing anything you have on your screen.
o My absolute favorite is ScreenCastOMatic (Links to an external site.)Links to an
external site.
o Jing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. is also very popular, but I
find the features I often want are expensive.
o If you have the resources, the Techsmith (Links to an external site.)Links to an
external site. suite - Snagit and Camtasia, in particular, all have educator
discounts. Just register with an .edu email address. There is a bit of a learning
curve with Camtasia, but it's very powerful. Snagit (Links to an external
site.)Links to an external site. has sales now and then that are very good but let's
face it, we don't usually have the resources to afford them.
