Ths work investigates the bending resistance a typeof compte ‘mel ues, which i easily obtained by emboding a group of smal single ees into an enveloping tube “This type of embedded mul-cel tubes flexible sectional dimensions and shape, easily prepared and highly casteflective. Three point bending tests ae st performed to investigate the bending behavior and response of ‘bedded snli-ell tubes with diferent cel configurations. The influences of rction condition end treatment and partly filing ae also sade experimentally. Numerical simoltion of the experiments then erie out by employing the explicit finite clement code LS-DYNA. The simiation results generally compare wel with ‘experiment. The quasstate and dynamic bending responses of both embedded and traditional mutt tubes with slimost the same sectional shape ad dimensions are investigated sumercally. The bending resistance of ‘embedded mltcll ube s fund to account fr bout 65-72% of eorresponding trios mal-ell bes. 1. Introduetion In the past two decades, different approaches are employed to im- prove the erashnorthiness performance of thin-walled energy absor- bers, including adopting metallic foam fillers (1-5, multicel setions [6-22] and mast recently variable wall thiekness (23-28). Among these methexls, adopting mult-ell tubes is the most promising one and has received enormous attention in the research community. The energy absorption capacity of them in various load eases was investigated, and in almost all cases the efficiency (SEA, specific energy absorption) of rmultF-cell tubes is very much higher than that of single cell tubes. The axial crush resistance of mult-cell tubes (6-16,18) attracted the most attention. In aval crushing, the SEA value of multi-cells was demon strated [10) to be greatly (upto several times) higher than that of single cells. Theoretical models (6,10,14] were established to analyze the ‘enetgy absorption mechanisms of the constituent elements and (0 prediet the mean crushing force and energy absorption of mult-cell tubes. Comparatively speaking, the studies on mult-cells subjected to transverse [19,20] or oblique loads (21,22) are quite few and generally ‘concentrate on numerical analysis. The reason fr this is that theoretical analysis for bending or oblique collapse is much more complicated than. that for axial erushing, while the experimental study is hampered by the Inconvenient fabrication of multi-cell tubes In fact, multi-ell cubes with various setional shapes ean be pro: duced by extrusion process, However, i is only suitable for large-scale manufacture. Specialized equipment is required fo the production and any change in shape or dimension of the cross-section requires the Production of a new mold. Ths leads to poor flexibility and low cot effectiveness. To overcome this drawback, a novel type of embedded rult-cll (EMC) tube, which is highly costeffeetive and easily aval able, was proposed recently by Zhang etal. (29). The EMC tubes are constituted by a group of single tubes confined within a larger thin walled envelope, On the basis of experimental tests and numerical in vestigations, the axial crush resistance of EMC tubes was analyzed by them [25}, and the interaction effect between the inside and outside tube was reported to account for about 40% of total erush resistance of the whole structure, In this paper, bending collapse responses of EMC tubes under three point bending loads are investigated. Quasistatic loading tests of empty and EMC tubes are carried out first, and numerical analysis is then Performed to simulate the experiment. The energy absorption char acteristics of EMC tubes with various configurations are analyzed, and the energy absorption efficiency of EMC tubes is compared with that of traditional single cll and multi-cell tubes. Specimen preparation ‘Aluminum alloy 60630 square tubes with different dimensions are ‘employed to prepare the EMC specimens. Square tubes with the outer ‘width C = 32mm and the thickness ¢~ 0.98 mm are served as outside ‘envelopes, and two square tubes with C= 10 and 15mm are used as the inside embedded tubes. The thickness of all the inside tubes is ‘Lim, The specimens are shown in Fig. 1(a) and the cross-sectional shape i plotted in Fig. 1(0). Apparently, four eels of C1OC1 and nine cells of C1St1 can be inserted into C2210.95 to constitute the EMC tubes, It should be mentioned that the inserting process may not be quite easy although theoretically there is a small margin of 0.1 mm between the inside tubes and outside tube. Thickness and width toler: ‘ances are inevitable forthe tubes, and small burrs may be left on the tubes afer the cutting proces. The embedded tubes in EMC tubes hence show a tight contact withthe outside envelope. To investigate the in- ‘uence of frition on the response of EMC tubes, we consider two a¢-
