OBJECTIVE: By the end of today’s class the student’s understand how to hold their
snare drum sticks correctly.
GOALS:
While demonstrating, I will tell my students to:
find the American flag (fulcrum) on their sticks
place their thumb on the flag
pinch lightly the other side of the stick with the first knuckle of their index finger
wrap the last three fingers quite loosely around the stick
reciprocate this with the other hand

At this point I will check each student to fix any errors by moving their hands if need be.

I will then instruct my students to:

Pretend they are bouncing a tennis ball off the floor using only their wrist (no sticks)
explain that this is the proper movement for playing the snare drum
Make the same motions, but with sticks in hand playing a simple quarter note beat on
the snare kit

STUDENT ASSESSMENT: I will go around the room assessing the proper grip of the sticks
with each student during the quarter note beat. Where there are errors I will correct them
verbally, then by demonstration, and finally by physically helping their movements if need be.
