Garbage Record Book Marine garbage disposal Each ontry into the Garbage record book shall be signed and dated by the officer in charge of the operation. The following special areas, requiring special mandatory methods for the prevention of sea pollution by garbage, have been created for the purposes of Annex V. The Mediterranean Sea area, the Baltic Sea area, the Black Sea area, the Red Sea area, the Gulfs area, the Norlh Sea area, the Antarctic area and the Wider Caribbean region. This includes discharges into the sea, to reception facilites or to other ships, as well as the accidental loss of garbage. 2 Garbage and garbage management Garbage moans all kinds of food wastes, domestic wastes and operational wasies, all plastics, cargo residues, incinerator ashes, cooking oil fishing gear, and animal carcasses generated during the normal operation of the ship and liable to be Gisposed of continuously or periodically except those substances which are defined or listed in other Annexes to the present Convention. Garbage does not include fresh fish and parts thereof generated as a rosuit of fishing activilies undertaken, during the voyage, or as a result of aquaculture activities which involve the transport of fish including shellfish for placement in the aquaculture faciily and the transport of harvested fish including sheltfish from such faelities to shore for processing. ‘Tha Guidelines for the Implementation of Annex V of MARPOL 73/78, as amended by resolutions, should also be referred to for rolovant information, 3 Description of the garbage Garbage is to be grouped into categories for the purposes of the Garbage Record Book as follows: A Plastics Food wastes Domestic wastes. Cooking ot Incinerator ashes ‘Operational wastes Cargo residues. Animal carcass(es) Fishing gear (Refer to Guidelin -ze7moow to be developed by the Organization) 4 Entries in the Garbage Record Book 4A Eniries in the Garbago Record Book shall bo made on each of the following occasions: (2) When garbage is discharged to a reception facility ashore or to other ships: |.” Date and time of discharge 1. Estimated amount for each category in cubic metres V._ The reason for the discharge or loss and general remerks. 4.2 Receipts The master should obiain from the operator of the reception facilities, which includes barges and trucks, a receipt or certificate specifying the type and estimated amount of garbage transferred. The receipts or certificates must be kept together with the Garbage Record Book 4.3 Amount of garbage ‘The amount of garbage onboard should be estimated in cubic metros, if possible separately, according to category. The Garbage Record Book contsins many references to estimated amount of garbage. It Is recognized that the accuracy of estimating amounts of garbage Is left to interpretation. Volume estimates will differ before and alter processing. Some Processing procedures may not allow for a usable estimate of volume, e.9. the continuous processing of food waste.
