Impact Test  Test Temperature Verification (ASTM E23)

• Hold the specimen at the desired temperature within ± 1 oC (± 2 oF) in the 

temperature conditioning environment.
• Transfer for impact within 5 seconds.

Verification of Pendulum Impact Machines (ASTM E23)
• Izod machines are verified by direct verification annually.
• Charpy machines shall be verified directly and indirectly annually.

Indirect Verification (ASTM E23)
• Verification specimens with certified energy values
 Low (13 to 20 J)
 High (88 to 136 J)
 Super‐high (176 to 244 J)
The average value determined for a set of verification specimens at each 
energy level tested shall correspond to the certified values of the verification 
specimens within 1.4 J or 5.0 %, whichever is greater.
Indirect Verification (ASTM E23)

The reference values for the verification specimens shall be established on the 
three reference machines owned, maintained, and operated by NIST in Boulder, 
CO (Colorado), USA.
