Dear Comrades
Canadians for Peace and Socialism (CPS) has just been informed of the violent attack on
Jason and Bonnie Devine and their four children in their Calgary home on November 7th 2010.
CPS condemns this outrage as a politically motivated anti‐communist hate crime. All
evidence points to a neo‐Nazi group of perpetrators. This recent attack follows previous
incendiary and physical assaults on this young family. The authorities at all levels of
government know of these crimes and have failed to act to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Both of these young people are well known for their membership in the Communist Party of
Canada. The purpose of such acts of terror and violence is an attempt to silence these young
people and their advocacy for the cause of anti‐racism, labour solidarity, and municipal
politics on behalf of the working class of Calgary.
We recommend, and would support in any way we can, action by the CEC and the CC of the
CPC including an immediate visit to Calgary by General Secretary Miguel Figueroa to lead a
public campaign in that city and province to identify and bring to justice the fascist thugs
who have perpetrated this anti‐communist hate crime.
This crime is not a local police matter and cannot be allowed to be left in the hands of the
Calgary Police. This crime falls under federal law banning hate crime and may also fall under
anti‐terrorist legislation. The CPC must demand a meeting with both the federal and
provincial authorities in charge of public safety. That means Minister of Public Safety Vic
Toews who at the recent Halifax meeting on Security declared that terrorist threats are

monitored by his office on a daily basis. The Minister must be asked to review his files as to
whether he has information about the neo‐Nazi group in Calgary and if not why not. CSIS
must be asked to explain why it is not monitoring this group and pre‐empting their violent
acts. They are terrorists and must be treated as such.

The CPC must also demand a meeting with Alberta Minister of Justice and Attorney General,
Alison Redford QC and MLA for Calgary Elbow to conduct a full investigation into these
series of attacks. The CPC must also request a meeting with the recently elected mayor of
Calgary Naheed Nenshi. Bonnie Devine was a candidate for mayor in the election that
brought Mayor Nenshi to office on a platform demanding accountability in civic affairs. If
Mayor Nenshi is sincere about accountability he can begin by making the Calgary Police
accountable for failing to prevent this crime, failing thus far to conduct a successful
investigation and failure to apprehend thugs and home invaders who terrorize parents and
their children not once but several times.
The Provincial Leader of the CPC in Alberta, Naomi Rankin should be asked to arrange a
meeting between General Secretary Figueroa and Gil McGowan President of the Alberta
Federation to consider issuing a statement condemning an attack on one of its members. A
meeting with Calgary Labour Council President Collin Anderson should also be arranged to
publicly condemn the attack.
We would recommend that child and women’s advocacy groups in Calgary be informed of
the cowardly home invasion assault on this family that undoubtedly will cause distress and
trauma to the Devine children. The authorities at all levels responsible for child welfare
should be required to answer the question as to why they have not investigated these
attacks that threaten children.
