TOYOTA KATA Workshop Description
Toyota Kata is a brilliantly innovative scientific thinking pattern of deliberate practice to achieve a management system that pro-
vides the means to achieve two equally important objectives:
A methodology to achieve challenging objectives that are currently beyond the team’s ability to reach, and…
A way to develop managers and leaders as coaches for creating a culture of continuous improvement,
adaptation and innovation.
Case Example: In mid-2015, Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp., began the journey of transforming their 19 hospital, 15,000
employee organization using the newly created Baptist Management System. By utilizing strategic A3s, TWI – Job Instructions,
and Toyota Kata, the company has achieved:
• $5.3M saved to bottom line completing 9 Improvement Kata Challenges in first 9 months at 1 hospital
• $1M to the bottom line in decreased denials
• Turnaround times from PreOp to OR holding areas from 10% of cases > 40 minutes and, 70% of cases > 20
minutes in Dec. 2015 to 0% of cases > 40 minutes and 99% of cases in less than 30 minutes by Sept. 2016
• OR turnaround times from 28 minutes to 16 minutes and sustained for 3 years
• Surgery Operating Room on time starts of 1st cases at 0730 from 66% in Oct. 2015 to greater than 90% by Jan. 2017
• Cost savings in the Laboratory of $50,000+ after 2 months of applying Toyota Kata practice
• OR turnaround time reduced 45 minutes to 21 minutes and sustained for 3 years
Case Example: Cloyes Gear Company has used Toyota Kata, and the Advance/Shepherding Group within the company
achieve:
Deployed Toyota Kata in one facility effectively to produce 9 Improvement Katas in their first 9 months.
$1.1M in annual cost savings by completing 11 of their 22 Improvement Katas so far to date.
Built the coaching capacity to expand Toyota Kata to a second manufacturing facility.

Workshop Outline DAY 1

Understand the Toyota Kata methodologies through a hands-on Challenge exercise enabling
students to better understand:
The Improvement Kata: A scientific 4-step iterative PDCA routine that addresses
only those obstacles on the path of a trajectory leading to the achievement of
short term Target Conditions that are in line with a long term Vision/Challenge.

Using a generic hands-on exercise of creating a complex model using dominoes,

learners will understand the 4-steps of the Improvement Kata and begin the very
basic use of the 5 Question Coaching Kata.

Understand the roles of Learner, 1st Coach, and 2nd Coach at a very basic level so
that we can build upon the deliberate practice routine of the Improvement Kata
and Coaching Kata for skill development.

The Coaching Kata: A daily routine utilizing Five 1st Coach Kata Questions to help
teach the Improvement Kata thinking pattern and ensure it is imbedded within an
organization via team accountability.

When you conclude with this very interactive class you will have the tools needed to develop and
conduct KATA Practice that will excite the workers and please the management.
