ALERT
SA October 11, 2010 Number: SA 258-001
To: All U.S. & Canadian Distributors
Attention: Service Manager, Dealer Principal
From: Regulatory Affairs Department
Subject: Aftertreatment Fuel Injector (AFI) Torque

Mack Trucks has received reports of AFI leaks resulting in engine fires. In every case, it was determined that the
AFI fuel fitting was improperly re-assembled (i.e. left loose or cross threaded) when being serviced causing a
subsequent fire when a regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) occurred.

We are sharing this important information, which we ask that you provide to all relevant people within your
organization. Please note that there have been only a few reported cases, which indicates that this is not the
norm but the exception; however, since the potential consequence is severe, we want to reiterate the importance
of torquing the fuel fitting for the AFI to the required torque specification.
Important facts regarding the AFI:
x Required Torque is 15 ± 2 Nm (11 ± 1.5 ft-lb)
x The fuel line to the AFI is only under pressure during a DPF regeneration
x Spraying fuel from a loose fitting at the AFI can result in an engine fire

Please feel free to contact the Regulatory Affairs Department at vtna.regulatoryaffairs@volvo.com if you have any
