Synopsis

The show opens on a lovely 50’s housewife, Kit, in a beautiful home. She
reflects on all the things she’s grateful for. (Life’s a perfect picture) She enters her
husband’s office and sees him reading a letter. He sees her and immediately locks
it away warning her that she shouldn’t be in here. She asks what’s in the letter and
he tells her she shouldn’t worry about it. Its “men’s business.” She tells him she’s
sorry and that she truly loves her life with him. The only thing that would make it
better is if they could start a family (Two’s company, is three allowed?) He rejects
the idea, leading her to believe that he is having an affair. He heads off to work
leaving Kit home alone. Her mind begins to wander and she imagines an angel and
a devil “on her shoulder” telling her what to do. The devil warns her that her
husband is definitely having an affair and she should open the drawer, while the
angel tells her that she needs to have faith and trust her husband. Ultimately she
agrees with the angel, believing in her husband and deciding not to open the
drawer. However the devil tells her if she really trusts her husband so much then
there can’t be any harm in opening it. (song) Letting her curiosity get the better of
her Kit decides to open the drawer, despite her better judgment. Expecting to come
across a letter catching a husband in an affair she actually opens medical results.
Realizing that what her husband was actually trying to keep from her is that she’s
dying of lung cancer. She immediately shuts the drawer, but realizes that she can
never un-see what she has seen. She sings of her remorse, reflecting on the fact that
sometimes ignorance really is bliss. (song) Her husband enters to find her weeping
on the floor and tries to comfort her, explaining that he was just trying to protect
her from the truth. All he wanted was for her to keep having the perfect life. (Life’s
a perfect picture (reprise)) She is moved by his love for her and admits t hat while
she may not have a lot of time left, it’s okay because she still has a husband and a
home, but most importantly of all she still has hope. (Finale)

Life’s a Perfect Picture

(Intro A, A’)

Mother said the girl who marries

Lives a life that never varies
Sitting home all day
Withering away
So there's no use in searching for the one
For all you’ll find is how to hold your tongue
It seems that once you've tied the knot you’re hung
But I have never had such fun

Cause each morning I awake

And life’s just a piece of cake
Which is something that I bake
With my brand new mixer
Elvis plays from the Hi-Fi
As the dishes wash and dry
And well I don’t bat an eye
Life's a perfect picture

Cause my husband loves the smell

Of my perfume from Chanel
And we both love New Rochelle
So we never bicker
And he loves my pinned up curls
I look like the pin up girls
Which is why he bought me pearls
Life’s a perfect picture
For there’s nothing like married life
Nothing grander than being a wife
