We WIL be Inspired!
Which of many women made you want to do more? Live a
fuller life? Change the world?

Throughout the month of June, we’ll be sharing some of the women

who inspired the WIL team and invite you to share your
stories. One of our goals at SC Women in Leadership (SC WIL) is
to remind everyone of those who paved the way for our current
successes; the strong shoulders on which we stand.

The ERA for women and men was not born in 1972 or 2019. The ERA was introduced in 1920,
nearly 100 years ago, and we’re still fighting for equality today. Freedom from sexual harassment?
That movement became public back in 1991 when Anita Hill faced the U.S. Senate Judiciary
Committee to testify re: Clarence Thomas, not with the #MeToo movement. Women in South
Carolina were officially granted the right to vote and serve on juries in 1969 when our reluctant
legislature finally ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. None of this was
"given" to us.

Who inspired you?

Who was Betty Bumpers?

Never heard of her? If you worry about the increase in
measles in the U.S, thank Betty Bumpers that it took from
1971 until 2019 for that dreaded illness to return. The wife of
former Arkansas Governor Dale Bumpers practically
invented immunization programs and then turned her
attention to nuclear proliferation. She worked to educate
communities about peace, cultural diversity, non-violent
conflict resolution, global cooperation, and violence
prevention. She was one inspiring woman! She died in 2018
but we could use her energy now. Read more>>
Update: Boards & Commissions for June
We’ve updated our city and county boards and commissions with new entries. While a few
positions have been filled, nearly 700 remain vacant across South Carolina. This is our
opportunity to begin changing the culture of our democracy from the ground up by stepping
forward to serve in our own communities. We’ve heard some stories from women who’ve already
applied. If you have applied, tell us about your experience. Good? Bad? Did you receive a
response? We want to hear about it!

Check out the hundreds of opportunities to serve in Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville along
with dozens in other counties. While we cannot directly impact politics in Washington, we can
build a bright future by starting locally. If you decide to apply for a board, make sure you tell us
about your experience.
