THE PIANO

The story begins in the 20th century, in a small town. Anthony Evans, who is a big
silent boy isn't very clever at school. When he is 13 years old, he leaves school to
find a job. His mother helps him and he finally finds a job in a farm. So his mother
decides to take him to Mr Wood's farm. She asks the owner if Anthony can work
here and the owner accepts.

Sir Anthony Evans, the famous pianist, tells the story of his early life to Sally Hill, a
journalist, before he plays at his eightieth birthday concert.

When Tony was young he was poor and did not shine at school The only lesson he
really enjoyed was singing When he left school at thirteen, his mother got him a job
on a farm.

The farmer and his wife, Mr and Mrs Wood, had a daughter, Linda, but they are not
and they were kind to Tony who worked hard and was very happy.

One day, Tony and two older boys, Pip and John, found a piano in a barn they were
clearing out. When Tony began to play, the other two and Linda were amazed at
how beautifully he did it. Mr Wood was not interested in the piano and Tony decided
to take it.

Later the boys put it in the local school, empty until the end of the holidays. Linda
and Tony kept his playing a secret and every evening she taught Tony to play with
the music from her own lessons.

Eventually, the local teacher, Mr Gordon, heard Tony playing, and told the Woods
how good he was.

The Woods then decided that they would pay for him to go to a College of Music and
that he should go to Mr Gordon for a free lesson and practice every afternoon The
following spring, Mr Gordon entered Tony in a local music competition. On the day,
Mrs Wood Anthony Evans (his name in the program) suit and some shoes which
were too small. But when I started to play, Anthony forgot about them, I've played
well, and won the competition.
This is the end of Sir Anthony's story. I went to the College, married Linda when he
was twenty, and became a world-famous pianist, and a happy man.
