• Four types of bibliographic access points in a catalog:
1. Names of persons (e.g. authors, editors, compilers, translators,
illustrators)
2. Names of corporate bodies (other than solely as distributor or
manufacturer)
3. Titles
4. Names of series
Concepts on the Choice of Access Points
1. Main entry (a.k.a. primary access point)
• Author (most cases)
• Title
• Corporate body
2. Authorship
• Personal author – the person chiefly responsible for the creation of
the intellectual or artistic content of a work.
• Corporate body – an organization or group of persons that is
identified by a particular name and that acts, or may act, as an entity.
• Examples: associations, institutions, business firms, governments, government
agencies, religious bodies
• Conditions of authorship:
• Works for which a single person or corporate body is responsible
• Works of unknown or uncertain authorship or by unnamed groups
• Works of shared responsibility (e.g., two or more authors)
• Collections and works produced under editorial direction
• Works of mixed responsibility (e.g., author and editor)
Main entry under Personal Author

• Single personal authorship (21.4A)

• Shared responsibility
1. Principal author (21.6B)
2. First named author if responsibility is shared between two or
three persons if no principal author is indicated (21.6C)
• Mixed responsibility
1. Adapter for a paraphrase, rewriting, adaptation for children, or
version in a different literary form (21.10)
2. Writer of the text for a work that consists of a text for which an
artist has provided illustrations (21.11A)
3. Artist for a separately published illustration (21.11B)
4. Original author for an edition that has been revised, enlarged,
updated, etc., by another person if the original author is still
considered responsible for the work (21.12A)
5. Reviser of an edition if the original author is no longer considered
to be responsible for the work (21.12B)
6. Commentator of a work consisting of a text and a commentary by a
different person, if the latter is emphasized (21.13B)
7. Author of the text of a work consisting of a text and a commentary
by a different person, if the text is emphasized (21.13C)
8. Original author of a translation (21.14A)
9. Biographer-critic of a work by a writer accompanied by (or
interwoven with) biographical or critical material, if the latter is
emphasized (21.15A)
10. Writer of a work accompanied by (or interwoven with) biographical
or critical material by another person who is presented as editor,
compiler, etc. (21.15B)
Main entry under Corporate Body
(21.1B2)
1. Works of an administrative nature dealing with the corporate
body itself or its internal policies, procedures, and/or operations,
its finances, its officers and/or staff, or its resources (e.g.,
catalogues, inventories, membership directories)
2. Some legal, governmental, and religious works of the following
types:
a) Laws (21.31)
b) Decrees of the chief executive that have the force of the law (21.31)
c) Administrative regulations (21.32)
 d) Constitutions (21.33)
e) Court rules (21.34)
f) Treaties, etc. (21.35)
g) Court decisions (21.36)
h) Legislative hearings
i) Religious laws (e.g. canon law)
j) Liturgical works (21.39)
3. Works that record the collective thought of the body (e.g., reports
of commissions, committees, etc.; official statements of position
on external policies)
4. Works that report the collective activity of a conference (e.g.,
proceedings, collective papers), of an expedition (e.g., results of
exploration, investigation), or of an event (e.g., exhibition, fair,
festival) falling within the definition of a corporate body, provided
that the conference, expedition, or event is named in the item
being cataloged
5. Sound recordings, films, videorecordings, written records, etc. of
performances resulting from the collective activity of a
performing group as a whole where the responsibility of the
group goes beyond that of mere performance, execution, etc.
6. Cartographic materials emanating from a corporate body other
than a body merely responsible for their publication or
distribution
7. Official communications from heads of state, heads of
government, heads of international bodies, popes, patriarchs,
bishops, etc. (21.4D1)
Main entry under Title
Works that do not fall into the categories of works that require main
entry under a person or corporate body are entered under the title
(21.1C).
1. The personal authorship is unknown, uncertain, diffuse (i.e.,
authorship being shared among four or more persons without
indication of principal responsibility), or cannot be determined,
and the work does not emanate from a corporate body
2. It is a collection or a work produced under editorial direction that
has a collective title
3. It emanates from a corporate body but does not fall into any of
the categories listed under rule 21.1B2 (i.e., entry under corporate
body) and is not of personal authorship
4. It is accepted as sacred scripture by a religious group
Added entries (21.29 – 21.30)
• Entries, additional to the main entry, by which an item is represented
in a catalog
• A.K.A. Secondary entries
Added entries under Personal Names
• Made for the following:
• Collaborators (up to three)
• If there are four or more collaborators, added entry is made for the first named only
• Writers
• Editors and compilers (rarely made for a serial publication)
• Translators (made in certain cases only)
• Illustrators (made in certain cases only)
• Persons related to the work in a way other than being responsible for the
creation of the content of the work
Added entries under Corporate Bodies
• Prominently named in the work unless it functions solely as
distributor or manufacturer
• If four or more corporate bodies are involved in a particular work, an
added entry is made under the first named only
Added entries under Titles
• It has not been used as a main entry
• The title added entry is so similar as to duplicate the main entry
heading or a reference to the main entry heading
• Any other title (e.g., cover title, caption title, etc.) that differs
significantly from the title proper
Added entries under Series
• Make an added entry under the heading for a series for each
separately catalogued work in the series if it provides a useful
collocation, except if:
• The items in the series are related to each other only by common physical
characteristics
• The numbering suggests that the parts have been numbered primarily for
stock control or to benefit from lower postage rates
• If in doubt, make a series added entry

Choice of Name
• In general, choose the name by which a person is commonly known
(22.1A).
• If a person is known by more than one name (other than a
pseudonym) choose the name by which the person is clearly most
commonly known, if there’s one (22.2A1).
• If all the works by one person appear under one pseudonym, choose
the pseudonym (22.2B1).

Enter a corporate body directly under the name by which it is
commonly identified, except when the rules provide for entering it
under the name of a higher or related body or under the name of a
government (24.1A).

Use the conventional name of a government, unless the official name
is in common use. The conventional name of a government is the
geographic name of the area over which the government exercises
jurisdiction (24.3E1)
