Tips in Paraphrasing:

1) The statement must be in your own words.


2) If you use any phrases that are in the original quote, place them in quotation
marks.
3) Add a citation.
4) If you’re having difficulty paraphrasing, make a short list of the quote’s main idea
and words that relate to it.

Sequence Markers/Sequence signals

Signals how to interpret the relationship between sentence in a number of different


ways:

1) Indicate chronological order (first, secondly, later)


2) Add to or reinforce what has already been said (furthermore, in addition)
3) Indicate that two propositions have equal status (likewise, similarly)
4) Indicate cause-result relationships (consequently, so, as a result)
5) Indicate contradictions (on the contrary, conversely)
6) Exemplification (for example)

Uses of Colon:

1) To introduce a list, quote or statement


2) To separate numbers in various instances
3) To separate a title from a subtitle in a book, lecture or other body of work
4) In memos or after a salutation in a formal or business letter
5) After a summarizing word
6) In dialogue writing

Uses of Semi-colon:

1) To separate two complete, but related sentences


2) To separate two, often contradictory, often complete sentences with an adverb
“however”
3) In a series, especially when it calls for multiple commas.
