The content of this analysis is about the story: Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest

Hemingway, originally published on August 1927. The story was all about an American man with

his partner, spending their time in an express station, while waiting for their train to Madrid, Spain.

They were talking about serious matters about the girl’s operation, over glasses of beer. The story

is set in Spain, in a valley where the train station is located. In the story, the girl sees mountains in

the valley as if they’re like white elephants, and the American man countered her statement that

he never saw white elephants. They ordered more glasses of beer as the girl whines and the man

lectured his partner that she should cut it out and try to enjoy themselves while they are drinking.

The girl replied to her partner that the hills look like white elephants no more. The man suggested

that the operation is awfully simple but it’s like not undergoing an operation at all. The man talked

to the girl as if he is narrating how the operation would happen and told her that it’s nothing just

to relieve her. The girl felt bad and had nothing to say after the American man told her such things.

The man continued his talk and told the girl that he’ll stay with over the duration of the operation.

And convinced her that it’s all just letting the air inside her and the operation’s finished and it’ll

be nothing to her. The girl asked doubtingly, what would they do after and the man replied that

they’ll be alright afterwards, and they will stay as they are, together. The girl countered, what made

him think so. He told her that is what bothers them and it is the only thing that makes them

unhappy. He referred to the reason behind the girl’s operation. The girl disagreed and told the man,

will they really be happy and fine after the operation. The man selfishly replied to her that they

will be and she has no reason to be afraid. He has known so many who have done that kind of

operation the girl answered, she also knew people who undergone the same operation and ended

up living happily. The man gave up his selfishness and left the decision to his partner. He told her

that she does not have to undergo an operation if she does not want to.
