Service Learning Project

For my Community Service project, I helped out at one of my old dance studios in Las Vegas
under the direction of Maria M.

While I was there, I aided in the music selection for her multiple ballet classes, stayed after
certain classes to help clean and organize the studio’s, and also helped file various forms for an
upcoming performance in the front desk boxes. I was responsible for being on time to the
classes that I was in charge of the music for so the teacher could focus on correcting the
students and keeping their attention verses losing the focus when finding a certain song that
would fit musically to the counts and steps in the ballet pieces.

While this service project did not contribute to the community, it helped the dance studio as a
whole. This dance studio is a very small ballroom/ballet studio in Las Vegas. When I stayed after
certain classes to help clean the ballet barres and the mirrors, as well as the floors this greatly
helped the overall appearance of the studio, but also helped the staff there.

A suggestion I have for this studio would be to see if they can get more volunteers to do just
about what I was there. Organizing the front desk definitely helped the organization of the
studio. With the paper under the correct students name everything was much easier to find
and less of an unorganized mess. Having someone assist the music in the baby ballet classes
made instruction time longer but also more valuable.

While I was there to assist in the classes and help organize the paperwork, I was able to learn a
great deal on ways to teach baby ballet classes. As a ballerina myself, I can one day see myself
becoming a dance teacher. While it is good to have a dance background, it can much different
from teaching a school classroom of kids. I was able to compare the two after the fact since I
completed my field hours later in a school setting.
