An estimated 110 million dollars has been paid to

farmers and their organizations by U.S. importers
for Fair Trade coffee purchases since 1998. In
addition to the increased economic benefit
and security to farmers, this has enabled farmer
organizations to take advantage of improved
supply chain positioning in a high “C” market, and
to invest in education, healthcare, technical and
environmental training, women’s programs, and
capacity building.

Estimated Additional Income is based on the farmgate price as reported by the ICO and on coffee trends determined by the “C” price. Estimate is weighted by the
volume of coffee imported by TransFair licensees and the price paid from each origin. Estimate is subject to change as additional data becomes available.
2
Estimated Additional Income 1998 – 2005 is calculated based on data sampling, surveys of Fair Trade Certified cooperative managers, and the Nybot “C” price.
3
Multiple cooperatives frequently work together to form one “Top Level Co-op”, also referred to as Second Grade or Third Grade Coops, depending on the
organizational structure. The number of Co-ops above reflects the total number of Co-ops that sold into the U.S. market with a unique FLO identification number.
4
For 1998-2005, the “Number of Countries” refers to the total number of countries that have participated in the Fair Trade system within the U.S. market; this does
not imply that all countries have supplied coffee in each period. 2006-2007 figures represent the number of countries supplying in the period.
5
The ICO price 2006-2007 is a estimated weighted average of the farmgate price for Arabica grade coffee by origin of Fair Trade imports. The ICO price 1998 –
2004 is the average of the ICO Composite price compiled monthly by ICO and is based on both Robusta and Arabica quality grade coffee.
